It has been 47 years since Pat Hutchins gave us the seminal picture book, Rosie’s Walk and she has now published a sequel called Where Oh Where is Rosie’s Chick? Fantastic news! We have a copy in the Curriculum Centre for anyone interested in finding Rosie’s chick or just to see whether she has stayed faithful to the original. I mean, a lot can happen in 47 years!
Another picture book favourite, Eric Carle, has revealed a new book in the pipeline. It’s due to be published this autumn and is called The Nonsense Show:
‘I’ve written The Nonsense Show to introduce children to the wonderful world of surrealism,’ said Eric Carle. ‘I hope this book will make children both laugh and think, and prepare them for a lifetime of loving both words and art.’
In other book news, the winners of the English 4-11 Picture Book Awards have been announced:
- Ages 4-7 Non-fiction – Gravity by Jason Chin (Andersen)
- Ages 4-7 Fiction – Orion and the Dark by Emma Yarlett (Templar)
- Ages 7-11 Non-fiction – Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill (Flying Eye)

And finally, the 2015 winner of the Little Rebels Children’s Book Award is Scarlet Ibis by Gill Lewis (Oxford University Press). Well done Gill! Scarlet Ibis is also on the shortlist for the UKLA Awards and is the next title for discussion by the 7-11 shadowing group so it will be interesting to hear their views.
