Mankind and AudioActive have teamed up to offer ‘Room to Rant’ – Spoken Word Lyrical Writing Workshops

Aims

To provide a safe space for young men (16-25) to begin expressing themselves through music and lyric writing. The aim is to use the workshop as a vehicle for reflection and self-expression and to encourage young men to become more comfortable about sharing their feelings in a creative way. Through building confidence and trusting relationships we will then encourage the young men to continue this process in a group environment. Young men will have the opportunity to share their performances at our spoken word events if they would like to share their work.

Programme

The initial programme will offer five young men a set of two one-to-one sessions with an AudioActive tutor to begin lyrical writing around men’s issues and personal experiences of difficulties or challenges. Following these one-to-one sessions, we will then hold an eight week drop-in group where the five young people will be encouraged to join and form a group with the other participants, the group will be open and will welcome new young people on a weekly basis.

Referral Routes

Young people who are interested can request a place on the programme by emailing Clare McKinley at Mankind on clare@mankindcounselling.org.uk stating their name, age, contact details and why they would like to join ‘Room to Rant’. If the person is suitable an initial meeting will be arranged for the young person to visit Clare at the Mankind office to discuss the project and whether they would like to begin the programme. If it is felt that the project is the right place for the young person then a session with an AudioActive will be arranged to take place at the Mankind office.

Outcomes for Young People

–          Increase ability to share thoughts and feelings when they are struggling

–          Increase resilience and confidence

–          Build trusting relationships with staff and peers
