Problem solving for participation. 25.11.20

Thinking about briefs and solving them gives me a chance to focus on real world situations.

Project Brief B:

“You are working with a diverse group of visual artists with different abilities and practices which is invited by a fashion designer to join a project with 3 other similar arts organizations. The theme is ‘Inclusive fashion’. 100% profits from sales would go to the artists. 6 artists you work with are keen to take part and see their art printed onto leisurewear. Each artist selects 6 images of their own artwork which are scanned and sent to the fashion label design team. There is 1 week to do this and pressure from the design team to sign up for the project via a generic image use licensing form. Meanwhile social media resources are created by the design team using images of the artists found online. There is no dialogue with the design team about the process, but they do initially send a link to their portfolio.

The group pull out when they see the proposed designs, here:”

How would I redesign this project?

  • Check with artists to see language used is appropriate for their identities
  • Gradual approval system after each stage to check participants were happy with the outcomes
  • Adopt an affirmation model of ‘disability’ instead of ‘special needs’
  • Present listening form in a more inclusive format tailored to the project and participant group
  • Ask group members for photos instead of pulling from social media
