FINAL OUTCOME

In terms of my final outcome i have learnt and grown a lot from studying this module. i beleive this as it has allowed me to see how useful sustainability is and how we as a society should pump much more energy into it as not only does it make the wearer feel good but also makes the ones producing the movement so much more passionate about what they are aiming to achieve. It has also allowed me to create and experience so many kind and generous acts of kindness which allowed me to grow as a person and move my opinion more on the topic of sustainability. The use of the cameras and the way we were taught how to use them i think will help me later on in my creative path as it has allowed me to experience and gain skills on something that I will definitely use in later life. The fact that i also saw first account how much we as a society are wasting also taught me a lot from this module as well as allowing me to travel to places such as Southwick to discover the industrial part Brighton which i aimed to use a location shoot but ultimately taught me that some things just aren’t meant to be. I learnt that sustainability is all around us it is in the clothes we wear its on the road it is on walls the materials are surrounding us as we walk. I believe and one thing that sustainability has taught me is that in order to utilise these properties and valuable resources we as a society need to be more open to creating and making new things from used parts, fabrics or even just alter them to style in a new way and that way grow as a fashionable nation further. This module also opened my eyes as to how spontaneous and unique you can become with styling and how it can be captured in such a poetic way. To allow us to communicate through a lens and change the perspectives of many for the greater good of fashion and the world as we know it. I enjoyed being able to create a concept and run with it during this module as i love creating things from scratch and things that are not usually the norm. Although there was the challenge of learning how to use the functions of the camera and finding a way to sew the rubber together and just make the project come together as a whole. I believe that I have learnt a new plethora of skills whilst executing this module and I look forward to taking this further within my creative future.

TRY ON & TESTING SHOOTS

as we come to our last weeks I have completed the corset and skirt after rigorous sewing and learning how to create garments. this week was the time for  my model Isabella to try it on,  i made the corset a ribbon tying system to it fit perfectly to her body i tightened it and added a large bow on the back to elevate the flowing aspect within the images. This was one of my most achievable moments as i saw the inner tubes of a simple bicycle wheel form a functional and modern-esque fashion garment. We then tested some experimental images just to get a feel for the garment and the photo studio in Watts that we were going to use. I also played around with subtle positioning, i also wanted to incorporate a large amount of make up such as triangular black eye shadow. However I thought this took away the attention from the corset which was the main focal point. The results I am very pleased with given they were only the tester shots.

Creation process

Once I had established my creative idea for sustainability and how I could present this in a magazine like editorial photoshoot. I began the process of construction and designing my garments in which I was going to use to style the photoshoot I began by using scissors to slice the Tires in half and cut them into rectangles. I then washed them and treated them to remove all the dirt and grime that they had acquired over the duration of their use. From this point I needed to connect each rubber tube to the other. However this is where it proved difficult, as rubber is a very durable and thick material after several attempts at experimentation with a domestic sewing machines it became apparent that this material needed something more powerful. This is when I went to the fashion and designs studios and asked to be inducted in the use or industrial sewing machines. These machines proved to be much more powerful and fast and this being my first time using a sewing machine in years it took a bit of practice to master. However I used this to construct the entire corset as well as a skirt. The fabrics I found for the fabrics were mere scraps in the fashion design workshops that again I thought I could recycle and implement as a form of sustainability. When creating the skirt to compliment the corset, I followed a similar way of designing it to the designer Yohji yamamoto, using expresses shapes and structure to create a skirt that allowed for fluidity as well as symmetrical shapes.

Rythm & Bikes

Once I decided that tyres wee going to be the driving force of my project. I researched into the creation of belts, bags corsets and even shoes. When researching I realised that there were numerous organisations in South America and America where this was beginning to create traction. I took it upon myself to search among many different garages and bike shops in the attempt to find scrap inner tubes or even a whole tire. Numerous workshops didn’t hold any which I assumed was due to them being taken away as waste, this is until I stumbled across this bike repair shop. after speaking to the owner I was able to obtain an entire black plastic bins worth of tyres in which to work from. the shear scale of how many their were showed how many broken, punctured or old tyres that were just being thrown away. this motivated me to create something with the scrap rubber. beginning with the idea of a umbrella with the tubes attached to each spine to create a octopus looking piece, as this proved to be too fragile, I decided to change my perspective to something more practical such as a item of clothing. After researching an instagram designer named Oronti studio

I came to the conclusion to create a corset made of rubber tubes and style it from there.

TRIBES & SUBCULTURES – IN FASHION

During this week of experimentation we touched on the importance of tribes and sub cultures and explored the idea that a group of people or a movement can be distinguished by fashion and may use fashion as a way to propel their ideas. We were assigned the task to create a shoot and a run way as per the brief as a group we came up with the idea of a women drained from over-consumption. The idea that she has everything but wants more but is exhausted with keeping up with fast and high fashion. This I found linked with our project objective sustainability. as per the shoot below we used several pieces of clothing as well as props and make up to execute this look.

TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR BUILDING IDEAS FOR STYLING AND PHOTOGRAPHY

WEEK 2

TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR BUILDING IDEAS FOR STYLING AND PHOTOGRAPHY

During this workshop we explored how styling can create movement and can start a shift in society. We touched on the use of protesting by the pussy riot group who use aspects of styling focusing on accessories such as masks and expressive colours to emphasize their fight against cultural and political issues in modern society. One of the main movements they executed was their protest against Vladimir Putin who was performing human rights abuse in Siberia . This expanded my thinking on how styling isn’t just a way to look good and complete an outfit to express fashion but instead a form to express a message and create movement. We then went on to explore the importance of recycling wasted fabrics to also create3 narratives and grow the cultural change of sustainability. Within the brief we were given the task to to experiments with layering and the narrative of over consumption, As a group we decided to reuse old fabric and incorporate it into one of the prompt words ‘Water’. The discussion of where the shoot should be staged ended up with the conclusion of a location shoot, set on the seaside and we began experimenting with styling and props such as a bucket of water. This allowed us to slowly shape an understanding of our narrative. Using a national rail uniform to represent the poor treatment of workers in our current society and touching on the Living crisis. This allowed us to showcase how over consumption and mass manufacturing exploits the workforce. We built on this by wrapping my head in denim as this fabric is one of the most manufactured material and wanted to portray the sense that those who are the ones who constantly buy are blind to the fact that their affect is causing catastrophic strain on normal workers. We decided to incorporate position and stance within this shoot as showcased below we placed the worker above the over consumer to battle the societal issue

.

STUDIO & DESIGN WORKSHOP

Within this weeks workshop we experimented with the equipment that is available in the studio. Using new equipment and setting up the shoot using tripods soft boxes and playing with the intensity of lighting as well as the flash affect. At first setting up the shoot did prove somewhat shallenging learning where to place the light to get the correct shadow and the right light in the model. However after a lot of playing around and following the pamphlet that was handed out to us things became more workable and we started to see a change in the quality in our images. We also worked with different dimness of light and fabrics to create movement and still images within booths to create a more personal aspect to the image. This part of the exercise I found most useful as it reflected what I wanted to incorporate within my own project. As you can see in the photos below we attempted to create the shadows behind Evie as well as trying to capture in a warm light to elevate the shadows.

STYLING BY CHANCE

WEEK 3

within this week we discovered and experimented with the idea of styling by chance, whilst also taking heavy inspiration and artistic direction from the famous photographer Tim walker. Whose work creates a sense of motion, depth, clutter and much more. We were assigned with the task of using our own prices but to mix within our groups created characters and concepts. Using makeup and props and the use of bold colours and shapes. We followed the brief which outlined the creation of a photoshoot driven with a vogue magazine aesthetic.
I extremely enjoyed this task as we all took role Alisa being the producer and photographer and me and the three other being models and stylists in our own right. We embodies different characters and concepts yet still fit as an orchestral three. We used prop work within our shoot to add to the creativity and link it to Tim walker as he uses a lot of prop work within his own images. I was very pleased with the outcome and it helped shaped my thinking towards styling and photography as it was as if everyone was in unison. The images came out perfect and in general it taught me the colour schemes and prop work that I will want to use within my own shoot.

Camera Controls & techniques

CAMERA WORKSHOP
Within this work shop we were taken by Chris through the basics of manual camera controls and techniques, learning how to use ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed. This allowed me to challenge myself as I have never really worked with a digital camera in the past and I never particularly knew the intricacies behind the use of a camera and how it impacted the production of the image. We spent this time to study the different charts and documents that showed us how to capture motion, depth of view and lighting. This allowed me to gain an understanding behind the use of a camera and allowed me to grow my confidence behind the lens. I will look to use a darker setting for my shoots and increase the ISO but decrease the appeture. to get my desired image.

SPONTANEOUS STYLING

Image

WEEK ONE

Within this first workshop Rachel took us throught he requirments and basis of what the next module would look like touching on many different artists stylists and photographers, such as: Bethany Williams and Phoebe English.  it became apparent that sustainibility would be the driving factor within this module which is something i am ver passionate about and was delighted to know we were focusing on. The way Rachel presented the different ways stylist re-purpose and upcylce clothes and fabrics to create a more forward thinking toward fashion spurred my idea of using rubbeer or something to do with tyres as these are regularly available and are seen most times as waste.  we were assigned with bringing in a fashionable item that we could use within styling and photography and goven the task to put each of these items together to create shots. This proved to me to be very interesting and creative to see how we could use each item to play its own role within the design.
;
When styling these items we came up with the idea to go against the normal stereotypes of how each item is supposed to be worn and instead created a message to showcase that each item wasn’t just suitable for the ‘normal’ way to wear it this is emphasized by how we used the show as a hand bag and the scarf as a shawl. this was useful as it showed us that anything can be styled and you can always form a story behind the pieces or general piece and create and image that ultimately tells a deeper meaning.
