Body Painting Experiments

This shoot was inspired by Viviane Sassen. In this shoot I wanted to play around with the female form, exposing areas that are considered intimate but also disguising them at the same time. I used normal craft paints instead of body paints as the pigment was higher with these.

Viviane Sassen

Viviane Sassen is an artist who specialises in body painting. She does a lot of work on nude bodies and women in particular. As well as painting directly on the bodies, she also paints on top of the final image. I really like the way she uses the female form and how she paints on the body to expose and also disguise intimate areas, and also changing the identity of women with paint. I want to take elements from her work and place them in my own work.

Bea Sweet

Bea Sweet is a makeup artist who doesn’t take the traditional route with makeup. Her makeup looks are often avant gardens/editorial and she focuses on using women as her models and using lots of colours and textures. She recently did a project collaboration with Wilfrid Wood, who is a sculptor. They made sculptures of various models heads and Bea then created makeup looks on top of these sculptures and on the models themselves. I love the use of sculptures in this project and and how they have emphasised each of the models best and most distinguishing features to create these hyper realistic sculptures.

experimenting

I have been using paint and tights again to create new identities, I think its interesting how once the tights come off the face, you get a new pattern on the tights, creating a mask. Putting the ‘mask’ back on or on someone else, it will create a different pattern and identity on the face.
