Concepts

For this Photography and Styling project, we had to come up with 3 concepts for 3 different photo-shoots. In my pair, we have decided to have a main concept of ‘Distortion and Perception’ then from that have 3 different ideas that link together for our shoots. We decided the first shoot concept under perception would be lack of vision, so how people who are visually impaired might see other people. The second concept is perception under the influence of drugs and alcohol and we are hoping to have a set of photos that makes the viewer feel like they are under the influence. The final concept is sober perception and how a sober person would view the same situation but without drugs.

Styling Workshop – David Lynch and Raf Simons Inspired

Today we had another workshop with Stephanie John. We had to pick 2 artists/designers/producers who relate to each other and create looks inspired by that. For our shoot we decided to use Raf Simons and David Lynch as our influences as they both have similar aesthetics and male outfits. We started off in a photo studio, then went to the pier to get some cool photos that go with the look. I had a lot of fun doing this and I hope to do more men’s styling and photography in future projects.

Feminism Avant Garde – The Photographer’s Gallery

Last week, I went up to London with the other people in my group to visit the Photographer’s Gallery to see the Feminism Avant Garde exhibition. We decided to go to this exhibition because so far we have kind of decided we want to focus our project on Distortion or Identity and looking quickly online, it looked like we would get a lot of useful information from here to help out project get started. Whilst looking around the exhibition, I came across a photography series called ‘Self’ by an artist called ‘Annegret Soltau’. In the first few images, Soltau has wrapped thread around her face quite subtly. However as the potos progress it gives the effect of a cocoon, concealing her identity or trapping who she is, which i found really interesting and its inspired me to try something similar with different materials for my project. At the end of the photos she is photographed cutting the thread and kind of freeing herself from who she is pretending to be and showing her true identity.img_3833 img_3836

Tate Modern

Last week I decided to take a visit to London to go to the Tate Modern to help me with my project work. I decided to go to the Tate because it has a wide range of exhibitions and different artists to take inspiration from. I didn’t go for any exhibition in particular, I was mainly looking for photography inspiration for my project. Although I didn’t find much photography work that inspired me, I did see a few sculpture pieces that I thought were interesting and I ,might use for referencing in my sketchbook.

Types of Photography

Some different types of Photography include;

Fashion Photography – photograph for magazines, help create portfolios for models, potentially one of the most highly paid jobs in photography.

Nature Photography – natural scenery, waterfalls, mountain views and landscapes. Anything in nature can come under this category.

Wildlife Photography – photographing animals in their natural habitat, requires practice and patients.

Black and White – used to capture the raw beauty of the subject, right use of contrast and lighting can take your photos to another level.

Portraiture – Can be close up or full body shots, commonly used for capturing peoples emotions at the time.

Time Lapse – Best used for capturing motion or a moving object at different times and editing the photos together to show the movement.

Final Images

For my final images for the pins and brooches project, I decided to use projection to get my final outcome. I took photos of a brooch I had broken up and printed them on to acetate, then manipulated and distorted the image using tape, ink and scratching at the surface, then projected the images onto the wall and on the body to create a new way to ‘wear’ the brooch. I decided to use projection because the quality of the projection wasn’t the best but i liked how it gave a vintage look to my images which I felt was important to signify the history of brooches and how far they date back, however I still wanted to show that they are still very current in todays fashion by adding some colour and editing the photos again on photoshop. Overall, I am very happy with how the images turned out with the projector. first-image fifth-image fourth-image second-image sixth-image third-image
