I decided to begin my project with some observational drawings, I went to the town centre or the beach every day for the past week and did quick drawings of people that I saw, using a mixture of posca pens, fine-liners, and coloured pencils. Having to draw quickly helped me capture people’s energy and movement, and forced me to focus on shape and form rather than details, which I tend to end up focusing on when I draw from a photograph. It has really improved my confidence in my ability to draw people free-hand, without any pre-planning.
I noticed that in the first few days I was avoiding drawing faces, because I usually find them quite challenging, so I made an effort to focus on them, and I think that they improved massively over the week.
