This is the work I produced during the screen printing induction and I’m really pleased with my outcomes. I think that my design worked really well with this process, and I love the vibrant colours and smooth surface texture that screen printing creates.
I’d like to do some more prints in the future with different colour combinations and working on top of other materials such as, plywood, fabric, and pattern backgrounds.
When adding in the layer of blue on some of the prints, I painted directly onto the screen. I enjoyed experimenting with this technique because I like that you can’t be too precise and the colours and shapes have the freedom to move around slightly. In order for the print to work you have to get your design onto the screen fairly quickly, I quite liked this as it forced me to act on instinct and I came out with some really interesting shapes that I wouldn’t have had if I planned the designs. Some of my prints didn’t work as well as I would’ve liked, I think on some of them I worked a bit too slowly so not all of the shapes printed clearly.
I used Posca pens for the 1st and 3rd layer of my templates because I wanted the colours to be completely opaque and smooth, and I used ink for the 2nd layer, mixing it with lots of water so that not all of the ink would stick to the page. I think this worked really well in creating an interesting texture and patterns, and gives the print a more painterly look.
