Experimenting with colour palettes

These pieces are mock-ups of two pages from my storyboard, I chose to experiment with these frames because they show the same environment, but reflecting different emotions. I wanted the coral reef in the first piece to feature shrivelled up, dying plants to reflect the character’s feelings of despondency; I chose a colour palette with mainly brown and black undertones, although I chose to feature small pieces of green in the pages where the jellyfish is present, to show that it represents some hope for the fish.

I wanted the painting below to reflect feelings of exuberance and hope in the characters, so I chose to use a very vibrant colour palette with as many colours as possible; I tried to avoid using dark tones as much as possible, so that it would completely oppose the painting shown above. I used a combination of watercolour and acrylic paints, Posca pens, and oil pastels, which I think I will use in my final comic. I was a bit tentative about not giving the animals human-like expressions and faces, as I was unsure how I would be able to reflect their moods and feelings accurately, but I think that utilising the colour palette has worked really well. I tried to combine illustrator Betsy Walton’s style into these pieces, with bold colours, fine-line details, and not using many outlines.
