Thinking of becoming self-employed or going freelance in the future?

Sign up for a four-part skills programme created for students. It’s FREE and it’s called Work For Yourself

Freelance or startup?

Working for yourself can be a rewarding – and challenging experience. Perhaps you are thinking of starting your own business creating, making, and selling things, or delivering a service – or perhaps you are considering going freelance as a videographer, copywriter, or even podiatrist.

Whatever you have in mind, we (beepurple – the entrepreneurial startup service at the University of Brighton) have put together a new four-part workshop series to help you explore what’s involved and get ready to launch a venture.

Thinking beyond university

The four sessions in our programme are designed to help you start up and start out: thinking beyond university.  It would be best for you if you book all four workshops so that you can graduate from the course with a certificate.

What’s involved in the Work For Yourself Skills Programme?

Part 1: How to think of a good, customer oriented idea
Wednesday 18th October – 5:30pm-7:30pm

You will learn how to:

  • think of a good business idea
  • examine  who your potential customers are
  • work out your unique selling point and what problem you are solving for your customers.

If you have an idea already, we will also work through how to validate it.

Part 2: Build your brand and market yourself
Wednesday 8 November 5.30-7.30pm

Now that you’ve learned how to identify an opportunity and who your potential customers are,  you will learn how to:

  • tell your story and build a personal brand
  • market your startup: plan a simple strategy, understand your audience and how to reach them
  • be discovered online as a freelancer.
Part 3: Manage your money
Wednesday 22 November 5.30-7.30pm

This session helps take the fear out of finances.  You will learn how to:

  • decide on your trading status
  • keep tabs on your outgoing and earning
  • understand tax and accounting basics
  • price your product or service.

Part 4 Meet real entrepreneurs and freelancers
Wednesday 6 December 5.30-7.30pm

In our final session, you get to meet your peers who have started up their own venture.  They’ll share their tips and stories with you and you can ask them any burning questions that you have about working for yourself – for real!

The workshops are designed to help you start up and start out: thinking beyond university. Places on the programme are limited so make sure you follow the links to sign up for the four-session course as soon as possible.  If you come to all four sessions, you can ‘graduate’ with a certificate!
