This week I have been finalising my magazine, idem, after a long journey of research, investigation, experimentation and curation of content. I have now finalised all of my content and the layout meaning that my FMP is almost complete. I feel that this year I have developed massively due to pushing myself to complete work in spheres that previously I did not feel confident in. For the Editorial Brief in my second year, I had the role of copywriter and it was the first time I really enjoyed and felt proud of the work I created and so I knew that I wanted to create a magazine in my final year. However, this felt like a very big task as I was not thoroughly confident with my photography/styling/graphic skills at the beginning of the year. But after a lot of trial and error, I feel that I have curated my own visual style and honed it to be something that I feel proud of and passionate about.
My photoshoot for the feature ‘Fake It ’til You Make It’ showcases how far my photography, styling and editing skills have come. At the beginning of the year, I had very little confidence working within a studio setting which was mostly due to Covid and how many of my previous projects had been completed in outdoor settings/within my home. However, I really feel that with this shoot in particular I have managed to take professional images which display my styling skills, as well as my ability to use a digital camera confidently.
This is my favourite image from the shoot and the front cover image of idem.
This is the back cover of idem.
This is another of my favourite images, I love the purple corset and feel that this image shows it off really nicely.
I also feel that my photojournalism skills have drastically improved through my feature Skin Stories. Consisiting of 10 models all shot individually, this feature took a lot of work due to needing to source a variety of models with stories on their skin. However, I am really proud of how they all turned out and feel I have a strong variety of models throughout the feature as well as a wide array of stories that are paired alongside the visual content.
This image is the one which inspired the feature and is still one of my favourites from the entirety of idem magazine. I feel that this image really shows how far my photography and editing skills have progressed this year and to highlight this I have included the process of how I developed this image from my sketchbook. I feel that this captures how I was able to transform the original image into a strong piece of photojournalism.
Below I have included a few more images showing other models from this feature and the amazing stories their skin tell;
I also feel I drastically developed my skills whilst working alongside Leah Murphy (Reverie Magazine) for our collaboration Disrupted Sanctuary, as we curated an editorial photoshoot where we did not use a model. I had never completed a shoot which did not use a model before and so this felt quite daunting at first and throughout the shoot Leah and I commented on how different it felt without having a subject that could ‘move’ itself and follow our art direction. However, I ended up really enjoying experimenting with set design as this is something that I had never really explored before and it made me take a new approach to art direction and styling.
I also feel like I massively pushed myself with ‘idem discussions’ as I had previously never created digital content that used audio before, especially my own speech and voice. It was very daunting creating this but I feel it shows just how far my confidence has come, as well as my skills regarding content creation and promotion.
All of the images below were created in collaboration with Leah Murphy.
Overall, I feel that I have accomplished a lot of successful work over the course of the FMP module. Aside from my editorial photoshoots and collaborations, I have completed 9 interviews, written 3 articles, created a website and an Instagram where I have visually promoted my magazine, and completed a recorded conversation which opens up the possibility for a series if I were to continue idem magazine. I feel that I have come a long way since the beginning of my degree and it feels very strange to now be at the end but I have curated an outcome for my FMP which I am proud of and feel demonstrates my developed skills and creativity.
