Unfortunately, I have been ill the past few weeks and so have quite a backlog of work to catch up on and work I have completed but have not posted about- the most significant being my collaboration with Leah Murphy (Reverie Magazine). A few weeks ago we completed our visual work for the collaboration we are doing between our magazines, Reverie and idem.
This blog post is relevant for my sketchbook pages 36-40.
We created the set of a bedroom from a Covid-19 Lockdown using boxes which we covered in sheets and a pillow, as well as using a stack of magazines as a bedside table. We collected all of the objects surrounding the bed such as references to Covid such as a test and mask, as well as miscellaneous stuff such as skin care, mugs, food and smoking paraphernalia. We used Tracy Emin’s ‘My Bed’ as a reference, and feel that we accurately followed our reference for inspiration without recreating it. Below is an image we took using a fish-eye lens to show the whole set and studio;
I have included some of my favourite images from the shoot below;
I am really happy with how the images came out as our goal was to create a strong narrative solely through styling (without a model) which I feel we achieved successfully. It was my first time shooting without a model and it was challenging in ways I had not predicted and so this was a really good experience for me.
We also experimented with using gels to create the effect of TV static as shown below;
We want to have a double-page spread of the bed as demonstrated below:
Here I have demonstrated the effect of the gels we experimented with to create the visual of TV static, as well as how it could look with the background removed.
Above I have analysed our references to narcotics as well as experimented with removing the background to create a ‘baggy’ of narcotics which could be used.
We will complete the written content and editing as soon as possible and I will show the final layouts in another post.
