idem

Over the past week, I have been beginning to create my media pack and audience segmentation for my magazine. I first began with thinking of a name, knowing that my key theme is identity I researched the origin of the word. I then learnt that the noun ‘identity’ was first recorded in 1560–70 from the Late Latin word identitās, equivalent to Latin ident(idem). I fell in love with the word idem, translating to ‘the same’, the neutral being ‘id’ and the feminine being ‘ead’.

Having decided on titling my magazine ‘idem’ I began playing around with fonts and experimenting with symbols to go on to create marketing tools such as stickers and captivating visuals that could be used on social media and alongside my magazine as a product. I decided to use a hand-written style font to create a sense of individuality which I feel lends itself well to the themes I will be exploring in the magazine’s written and visual content.

I also decided to include an eye as a symbol as I will be researching the 5 senses and how they can impact our identity, focusing on sight. I will go on to play with transforming the eye symbol into stickers using colour palettes and font. I need to put together a media pack showcasing idem’s visual identity and factors such as potential stockists, competitors, pricing, etc.

I then began to create mock-up covers using both images from editorials that I have looked at in my sketchbook and a few of my own images. I have only played with my logo in black and white so far, but as I go on to develop my visual identity and colour palette I will experiment with more colours.

These are three front cover mock-ups that I created using editorials that I have used in my sketchbook. I particularly love the first image by Wolfgang Tillmans due to its Grunge style and raw sense of styling and direction.

Above is one of my own images that I have used for a mock-up front cover with my designed logo. I really like how this has turned out and feel it is a strong starting point for moving forward with creating my media pack for idem and experimenting further.
