After completing the Editorial Brief in my second year, I knew that I wanted to develop my skills in editorial, copywriting and publishing. I secured a placement at .Cent, a digital magazine where I was able to write and publish articles using WordPress. The topics varied from fashion, art, architecture, events and beauty, and often I was given a press release as a starting point. I went from publishing one or two articles a week to, by the end of my internship, up to 5 or 6 a week, showing my progression.
By using a press release as a starting point and creating a story from a product which developed into an informative article, I was able to develop a whole new style of writing that I had never experimented with before. I was also often in charge of pairing my articles with appropriate visuals and promoting them on .Cent’s social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, giving me the opportunity to develop my visual promotion skills as I could design posts that were eye-catching and informative.
The featured image on this post is from one of my favourite articles that I wrote, titled ‘A Modern Renaissance’, I promoted the luxury brand Ginori’s first venture into scent with their candle range. Inspired by the entourage who followed Caterina de’Medici from Italy to France, I managed to create a playful story on the range whilst also including all the relevant information to inform the reader.
I completed my 6-month placement with .Cent and afterwards I secured a part-time job working for the Arts and Wellbeing Research Centre as a social media assistant, running both their Instagram and Twitter accounts. This has helped me to further develop my visual promotion skills as I have now created posts for a range of topics and releases which will be incredibly helpful in my final year as I am confident in creating social media strategies and posts that will inform and entertain.
In my final year, I am fairly certain that I want to centre my research and FMP around creating a magazine that allows me to further develop my critical thinking and writing skills. I want to incorporate photography and styling, as well as visual promotion to ensure that my project is succinct and allows me to use a range of skills.
Below are some articles written by me for .Cent:
