Leah and I tested the setting for the shoot that we will undertake this week. We created the illusion of a bed using wooden boxes covered in sheets and fabrics that we found in the studio. We then strategically placed items around the bed, creating clutter and testing various ideas. These are all items we saw in the studio- when it comes to our shoot day we will be bringing in specific items such as a polaroid camera, bottles, a handheld gaming console, an ashtray and clothes.
We are taking inspiration from the Covid-19 lockdowns, and what it was like being trapped in our houses/rooms. I want to channel how our identity ties in firmly with our settings, and how our bedrooms are often a safe space where we can relax and be our true selves, without being socially perceived.
On top of the magazines, the red cotton reel is symbolic of a candle and the brown circle is suggestive of an ashtray. We also tested the idea of using a bedside table but could not find one that suited the set-up and was the correct height.
This set-up was too closed off and we did not feel that the chair matched the visual language of the set.
This table we felt suited the visual language better but was far too high up.
We then tested a lower-down table but decided it looked too random and did not fit the rest of the setting and so at this point, we decided against using a table and sticking with the stack of magazines.
We have booked a digital camera and a film camera, as well as a fisheye lens which we will experiment with to create a variety of outcomes that can be used in our magazines. I will also bring in a sunset lamp and a polaroid camera as additions to experiment with lighting/camera as props. Finally we may play with putting gels over the camera lenses to create tints and pull out certain colours.
We are going to have a play around with various layouts and settings as well as flat lays including references to Covid-19 such as a test and mask.
We will also include written content- each of us talking to the other about our Covid experiences in reference to the themes of our magazines (identity for idem and escapism for reverie). Hopefully, this collaboration will generate roughly 10-15 pages for my magazine and this will kickstart my production and the layouts’ visual language.
