Figure Experimentation

After researching models Michelle Olley and Kate Moss, I decided that I wanted to experiment with depicting identity through physical appearance. I experimented with physically altering photography by painting on top of images to change their effect. I particularly like the idea of creating masks and moving forward I will experiment further with facial features and altering the body in a drastic sense, as well as physically cutting and rearranging to create collages.

I particularly like how this image turned out as I experimented with altering the colour palette to create a further sense of depth and texture. The beginning image is very neutral and depicts two women staring out of a window for a fashion editorial, as I was painting over them, I felt that I wanted to keep the base visible and so chose to only paint either the clothes or the body.

I have planned my first experimental photoshoot where I will play with self-portraiture and convey the theme of identity through physical appearance and emotion. I will be in the images and source another model so that I can go on to experiment with photoshopping, cutting and rearranging to alter the images and their identity. I am intrigued by the idea of faceswapping and how this could be used to play with the theme of identity and so I will think about how I can experiment with this moving forward.

This is another image that I altered using acrylic to create a further sense of depth and layering. I left part of the face which I felt created an interesting effect as you can still see the original image peaking through, this could perhaps be developed into a metaphor of how our socially constructed identities hold part of our real identities, despite how we attempt to cover them subconsciously.
