Sarah Lucas’ work focuses a lot on self portraits and to me represents identity. What stands out to me the most in her images are often the objects she is holding, what she is wearing and how she is posing. I think they equally stand out because the they all link for example she is often smoking, wearing androgynous clothing with her legs open. As you keeping looking you begin to focus on other elements such as her facial expression, objects in the background and the food on her clothing. When looking at the images of her t shirt with fried eggs on her chest I think she was using the food to represent body parts and used the breast as they are often sexualised. I think what the photographs tell me about Sarah Lucas is she is an artist who is challenging sterotypes of gender and sexuality. I think the images are made to pocess powerful feminity and are a mixture of both masculine and feminine. They make you question why do we feel sitting with legs apart as manly and unladylike and why do we assume someones sexuality because of how they are dressed and look? Her expressions and body language are also very stern, with a serious mood which is emphasised by the way she staring at the camera. I also like how she makes self portraits of objects that represent and show her indentity without using her body and face.

FMP- RONI HORN PORTRAITS
Artist Roni Horn often uses the same model and displays them in a way that is very repetitive. What I like about her work is how they are very consistent and similar but if you look closely you begin to notice changes in mood and emotions of the model, although they may be subtle and not noticed at first glance. What stands out to me in these images are the models facial expressions. This is because the model often appears very still and somber but I find myself imagining what the model may be feeling, or thinking, or questioning if she has even moved at all, or if the image has been repeated twice. The images are very close up head shots and include little colour apart from the models hair colour, skin tone or the background. What leads your eye around the images are the models features and expressions as they change. I think the meaning behind the work is indentity and emotion. Although the images are very mysterious, the close up head shots are very intimate and personal. I think it is interesting how similar all the images look and how it makes you focus on the models face more than you would if there was just one photo or not as close up. I like how it almost resembles film stills and as if the model was on video and has been stopped at different times, seconds apart.
fmp- Lin Zhipeng Quarantine in Photos
Lin Zhipeng also documented his time in quarantine. What I like how the images is how they were not portraits of himself but photographs of his home, animals, pocessions. What stands out in the images are the subject he is focusing on for example the mask, cats eye, shaving foam, socks and tree. I think you notice the subjects more as they automatically relate to things we have all be constantly seeing lately. As you continue to study the photographs you begin to noitce the background more and imagine what his home may look like from the colours and objects. I particually like the image of the mask as it is shot infront a window and curtain. The curtain almost resembles the way we can not go or see outside but the light shining through suggests their is hope and makes you imagine what the outside of his window looks like. The background in the images are also very plain and do not show a lot of his home which I think adds mystery to photograph and links to how limited we are to seeing other things at the moment. I think the meaning behind the images is to show life in lockdown and how we often take things for granted such as the outside world, pets and nature.
fmp- heather glazzard. The artist shooting their queer friends in quarantine over FaceTime
Heather Glazzard used factime to screen shot and capture photographs of her friends. What stands out the most in the images are the people in them, how they are dressed, posing and their homes in the background. As you keep looking you begin to study the people more in depth, questioning how they must be feeling during this time, where abouts in the world they are and other elements in the background. You also notice the photograph in the top right corner and begin to study them and how they are taking the photo. What the shoot tells me about the photographer is she is trying to use this series to connect and remain creative. I like how you can also see her in the shots as it is almost like a double self portrait of the subject and herself. In the background it gives you a insight into the subjects homes and you begin to imagine parts of their character. The feelings behind the work to me are postive and lighthearted. I think the meaning behind the work is to maintain connections with loved ones and I think the shoot shows how we are communicating and staying in touch with the outside world online.
fmp-Covid 19 Project Update
Unfortunately due to Covid 19 I have had to make changes to my project. As I can no longer go outise, source models, shoot on location and have access to the university facilies and software, I have had to change my original concept slightly and cancel all shoots I had planned for the future. As my fmp project concept was based on youth I am able to use myself as a model and muse for my project going forward and am planning to document my time in quarantine.
As it is something I have never experiened living in before I think it would interesting to document. I am going to do a self portrait series and experiement which photographing myself using the self timer setting on my camera. I want the series to express how I am feeling in lockdown, what I am doing and how I look. As the only contact I have with the outside world will be virtural I am also going screenshot picture of online firends to capture what they are doing at home.
Before starting my self portrait series I am going to research how other artists and photographers have docuemnted their time in quarantined. This will inspire me and motivate me to get creative at home. I am also going to research self portraiture photography and begin to to make as tudio at home. I am going to keep my camera on me at all times, even on my daily walks to capture things that inspire me and represent the unprecedented times we are living in .
FMP- SHOOT TWO. MODERN MASCULINITY
fmp- Shoot One. Rave Culture Series
fmp- Gender moodboard
The concept of my final shoot is going to be about youth in drag, it will be a mixture of nightlife and portrait photograhy documenting the transformation process. I want the images to embrace creativty, break gender stereotypes and normalise make up being worn my men. The locations for the shoot will be a drag club in Brighton and a subjects home. In the club I will capture a vartiety of drag queens, dancing and performing to capture the atmopshere and different looks. The shoot at home I will take some natutal portraits of my model before transforming then capture the process of him getting ready to the end result. The colours will be very bright and vibrant to link to the artistic and high energy mood. The shoot will link to activism as being dressed it drag can be viewed as politcal and social statement and i want to challenge the way people view gender in youth. Drag also has links to the LGBTQ community and I want to celebrate inclusitvtiy and sexuality.
fmp-Youth in Love moodboard
The concept for this shoot is about youth in love and coming of age relationships. I want to photograph a young couple posing in intimate, candid ways to show how youth attach themselves to romantic realationships as a form of escape and to show the intense feeling of being young and in love. The location for the shoot is going to be inside my subjects home, taking a mixture of photographs in different rooms where I feel couples are most intimate. Shooting inside the subjects home will make the images more genuine as the subjects will be comfortable, natural and personal. I want the series of images to include nude portriats and be provactive and overwhelming to capture how being young and in love can become an obession and addictive. I am going to do a shoot of a hetrosexual and and homosexual couple. I want the two shoots to compliment eachother by showing how love has no gender. Therefore it would be an interesting concepts to combine and mix the two shoots together to create a caotic collage, minicking the highs and lows of being in love. I want people to be to connect with my subject and how they are feeling which is why i am going to shoot real life couples as the images will be legitimate. The meaning behind the shoot is to show how young love is very much real, valid and if not even more intense when expierenced for the first time. I want to capture how it feels, the good and the bad through provocative, seuxally heightend portraits.
fmp-The Face Of Modern Youth moodboard
The next shoot is going based on ‘the face of the modern youth’. The aim for shoot is to photograph a range of different young people which embrace indiviuality, difference and challenge the concept of beauty. Being young in todays generation from experience I know the pressures youth face when it comes to fitting into society’s standards of beauty and it can be a difficult time trying to be yourself. Therefore I want to take a variety of close up and long shot potraits of people in the same location to showcase the features and bodies and highlight how we are all unique and beautifu in our own way. For the location I am going to shoot some portraits outside for the purpose of natural light and some against a plain white wall so mimic model polaroids and prioritise the model by making them the main focus. I want the models to be shot quite still and capture them from different angles to really showcase their features and physiques.
