Lock Up 2

I created another lock up design that i felt would translate well to laser cutting. The idea for this lock up came from the theme of my Zine being on social media and change within the Youth. I used the same font Masterhead design but hand rendered a retro style bubble around it that i felt resembled a text message box.

Lock Up 1

Using one of my most successful Masterhead designs i hand rendered a lock up i could get laser cut. The idea came from the theme of my Zine Youth Culture which i feel has a strong connection to the streets which is where i got the idea to draw simple designs of modern buildings. Although i liked the style of the lock up i don’t feel like it would be appropriate to laser cut or compliment my Zine.

Workshop With Martha – Collages

Hierarchy: Refers to the order of information in respect to its importance.

Alignment: Refers to the structure of design, this helps to create order and visual relationships. It is used to organised graphic elements and the two most important alignments are called edge and centre.

Contrast: Contrast refers to opposites, it is used to create impact and often has a focal point. An example of contrast is dark v light or thick v thin.

In the workshop with Martha we were introduced to the typography design principles. We learnt that there are 5 in total: Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Hierarchy and Balance.

Master head and Strapline

In another session with Martha we learnt about the important of having and Masterhead and Strapline for our Zine and created our own. All zines have Masterheads as they are the title of the Magazine or Journal which allow people to identify them. Straplines are used to add interest and give the reader a sense of what may be inside. They are used as a selling pitch.

Before creating my own Masterhead i had to come up with what i wanted to call my Zine. To do this firstly i brainstormed any ideas i had for a title, as my Zine was about Youth Culture so i wanted to call it something that linked to this but also had a hidden meaning. I came up with the name ‘Disconnected’, This to me suggested how i feel the youth are disconnected from the society due to social media and change and i liked how it also linked to phones and technology.

I hand rendered the word ‘Disconnected’ in a variety of different of fonts which i felt would link to the style and front cover design of my Zine. I then went through the same process to create the Strapline ‘ raw and unedited modern youth’ something i think the images and illustrations in my zine will express.
