Street style: shoot 1

These are my most successful images from my first shoot that were originally inspired by Scott Schuman. A street style photographer who captures people in the street, connecting and showing the link between fashion and every day life.

I took the photographs in a location that i felt this modern day street style look is often identified with. The location had a very urban, edgy atmosphere which linked to the overall story i wanted the series of photographs to portray. For example the graffiti on the walls and floor seen in the background that also express today’s youth.

My model was styled in a red coat and matched this with red Adidas tracksuit bottoms. I feel the clothing has a clear link to the models quirky personality and look and also fits with the location.

Patterns Workshop With Stephanie John

For our second workshop we worked with patterns and prints to examine how they work together on the body. Researching into Fashion Designers and Stylists, looking at how they manage to put clashing prints and patterns together but still make it work and match. I researched stylists such as Grace Coddington, Tabitha Simons and Lucinda Chambers.

Prior to looking at the Patternity website this look was inspired by stripes and i wanted to experiment with how they would clash with animal print  (leopard print). I styled my model in a bright red Adidas jacket with blue stripes and matched this with black Adidas trainers with white stripes. Although the patterns matched i wanted to see how i could style opposing colours together. As i felt the outfit was too coordinated i styled my model in a leopard skirt to clash between the two. I like how this separated them and added more detail, creating a modern, street style outfit.

Fashion Photographer: Helmut Newton

Since starting my research for the AD137 Photography and Styling Brief i began to look into Fashion Photographers that i feel inspired by, Helmut Newton being the most influential. Not only did i look at the photography but also more deeply into the appearance of the models, styling, film photography and location. One thing that captivates me about his work is the way he photographs women as i feel his photography empowers them. Although it could be controversial as he photographs them often nude or in erotic moments or clothing, to me i find it very beautiful to look at. I feel the way he photographs women really accentuates and embraces their bodies and features. He captures women in ways which make them look powerful and dominant and uses further props such as cigarettes and cigars to add to this desired look.

He has inspired me to want to take photographs of women in particular and create a final concept of images based on them entirely. I will style them in possibly erotic but also body enhancing clothing to highlight parts of the body women are often insecure or feel the need to hide. Underwear, revealing clothing and nude photographs will be something i will experiment with.

French films will be another source of inspiration i will refer to and include in my work. Looking into directors such as Goddard and films such as ‘Breathless’ and ‘The dreamers’, i will look closely at how they capture women in certain shots and scenes.
