These are my 4 most successful outcomes that display 3 of my customizations. I deconstructed them in different ways for example the first image displays a pair of socks that i had cut slits in and joined together using safety pins. I used safety pins to link to the rebellious style i wanted my outcomes to express and the punk subculture in particular, taking inspiration from Vivienne Westwood. I also wanted to experiment with photographing people wearing the socks on different parts of their bodies such as the arms which was an idea influenced by 80’s and fingerless gloves.

Customizing

picture6picture5picture7I customized 4 different pairs of red socks taking inspiration from authentic subcultures and iconic designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Kanye West but also customized them in ways that I felt expressed my own style.

I experimented with bleaching, burning and cutting the socks. When I bleached the sock i liked how this made some of the red disappear and left the sock with a discoloured, tie dye effect linking to the hippie subculture. The way I applied the bleach was unintentional but the final outcome looks intended as the bleach has created half and half effect. The burned socks created black scorch marks and a crisp fragile texture. Although this made the socks very delicate when stretched the burn marks became holes adding to the desired destroyed look.I cut holes in the final pair of socks to maintain the rebellious look and create a unique pattern. For my final outcome i develop the sock by making the holes into bigger slits and joining them with safety pins.

Strangers In red socks

picture4picture3picture2At the start of my project based on the object of ‘red socks’ I went into the streets of Brighton to take photographs of people wearing them. On the first day I was very unsuccessful and found they red socks were not a very popular colour. However here are 3 of my favourite images I have captured of strangers wearing them. The three images together show how different people style them in different ways. For example the first image the person had rolled one sock down and left the other up where as the second image the person has chose to pull both socks up high and covered them with their jeans.  Although the three people had style the socks differently they all wanted the socks to be seen and wore them to make a statement. It was also interesting how the first three people I saw wearing red socks were all women and in total i only saw 2 men wearing red socks.

Social media research: instagram

For my research i looked on social media sites such as Instagram to find current fashion designers and artists that design or style red socks. Leyman Lahcine is a designer who frequently posts photos of models wearing his clothes and he styles almost all his outfits with red socks. Although he is an upcoming designer he has shown his collection at London Fashion Week. He often styles the red socks with dark clothing and footwear or matches them with another item such as a bag or t shirt. The use of red socks add more colour to his outfits and relate to his edgy streetwear looks.

My Brighton Freshers Week Experience

For my first Fashion Communication brief i needed to use my phone to communicate and document my first week of freshers. I could do this by putting together a collection of photographs, videos and sound recordings. Using my  phone enabled me to relive my week of freshers back through my eyes and it was interesting to see how i experienced it differently and similarly to my classmates.

When documenting my week i paid close attention to what people were wearing, doing, saying and feeling. My video began with my first ever shopping experience in Brighton where i filmed myself looking through a collection of vinyls. In this particular clip you can see my hands which i feel it makes the viewer experience what i was doing from my perspective. I also manipulated clips using apps, for example the clip of me filming my friends flicking through fashion magazines in the Magazine Shop was sped up using an app which also distorted the sound in the background. From watching my classmates videos i noticed a lot of them had music playing throughout their presentation, i chose not to use music but include clips where actual songs where playing so they could hear exactly what was happening around me and what people were saying.
