Project Reflection: Coming to Human Nature

The Research I have undertaken so far has impacted my FMP concept as it has allowed me to piece together elements to form my own responses. For example my research has helped me find the relationship between visual expression and written expression/ photography and creative writing. That I can now take forward when writing my own articles to pair with my photography in my FMP.

Explicitly this can be seen in my research into the book Running Falling Flying Floating Crawling by Mark Alice Durant. Where photos from various artists have been paired with creative writing. I was inspired by the freedom of interpretation this created with many writers given photos to narrate with no context.

My organically this process occurred when absorbing imagery in exhibitions, escapism and surrealism being particularly prominent themes to reflect challenging times. Leading me to look at what we do to escape and cope in order to navigate the world – Pass Times and Hobbies.

I am looking forward to seeing how my project develops and evolves.

Tuesday Tutorial Update: Moving forward with the magazine

Following on from last weeks tutorial where I discussed my ideas around looking at nature, photography, wildlife and niche hobbies after experimenting shooting outside with juxtaposing indoor wear in outdoor environments creating obscure narrative. As well as if an event would work best as the core or my FMP concept or a combination of the magazine event, perhaps a magazine launch event gathering the people I had spoken to and connected with a long the way.Over the last week I have been looking at potential competitors and what is already out there in the magazine world like Suitcase Magazine.

Discussing what would make my magazine unique?

–  Looking at the themes of Gorp Core, wildlife appreciation, clothing juxtapostion through outdoor lanscapes, narrative, digital world and senses – Through Story telling and narrative – In a surrealist style/ Photography experimental writing playing with scale and objects.

What to do for next weeek?

  • Somerset House Horrors Exhbition Research
  • Tim Walker found object sculpture
  • Statement of intent draft
  • Connecting my essay to my FMP through story telling themes
  • How is my sketchbook laid out?
  • Seb Patane Research – Layering and taking away from images

Updated Idea – What I enjoy, magazines, writing, and moving forward.

As this investigation project rolls on, I am beginning to evaluate what it is I would like to get out of it. In doing this I have been stripping my investigation back to thinking about what I enjoy doing and what I am passionate about, both within Fashion Communication and outside. In previous years my focus has had a greater emphasis on pressuring myself into achieving what I thought I should be creating from an outsider perspective within the course and in comparison to my peers.

Following on from my placement year within Arts and Culture PR, the Covid-19 pandemic, and seeing my boyfriend make a career out of sharing his passion through social media I have gained a different perspective. This is also of an increased importance to me, due to my epilespy diagnoses which I am learning and adjusting to live with. I have several seizures daily, that are often invisable to the untrained eye but for me cause dissorientation, confusion and isolation mentally. These are increased by stress and tiredness. What helps me destress is spending time, outside, helping other people and animals/ nature. This being said I aim to incorperate these things into my FMP, Essay and Business.

I have relealised that I most enjoy photography and styling in a Tim Walker style as he uses his camera, set design and creative process as a form of escapsim, and insists you must “Only photograph what you love” using it as a form of escpasism. His images have a dreamlike style with a detatched from reality and creating a fantasy more playful obscure world. Follwing on from this what my HCS essay my title is – Understanding the impact Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has had on Fashion Photography in the last 20 years.” Within this I will be exploring these themes of escpasim and how Carroll uses his writing as a documentation and expression of this. This is particulalry prominent to me as Focal Seizures are often connect and feel like Going down the rabbit hole. Written in 1865 the book was very much before it’s time in it’s underlying themes of mental illness, making it still of great significance today.

Withing my business I am creating a sub-brand to Urban Outfitters called Urban Outdoors, encouraging and making outdoor shoes more accessible, a form and function focus onto spending time within the outdoors. Something young people are finding a greater importance in.

Within my FMP I am going to explore the above themes of Escpasim, Nature and Wildlife appreciation, slowing down taking time for what you care and are passionate about looking at how this can be incorperated into your work and interviewing people who have made a jump to do, even if their hobbies are passions are unique. Currently I think the best way to achieve this would be within a magazine. The magazine would include interviews, Photography exploring nature and photography, raising awareness, and slow living.

Eloise Tutorial

During my tutorial with Eloise, I Shared images from my first experimental shoot, shot in the Lake District exploring the relationship between people, fashion and the outdoors.

The main feedback I was recieved was to look more into tech and digital in natural landscape. This is something I will explore by creating a wider landscape with only green in the frame.

This tutorial helped me develop get some clarity on my ideas so far and the direction I could take them towards. Towards shooting tech in the outdoors to explore consumer relationships.
