Working with my level 4 – Where I am now

I created this slideshow to currate sources, points of reference and key points of my project so far for Evie in order to get a better understanding of the direction. But in reflection this was benificial for me also as it allowed me to step back and look at my project from a wider context and outsiders perspective. From this I realised that I need to narrow down my idea to get a clearer more efficiant direction moving forward. Looking at my work so far I feel moving away from using water on location would narrow in the woodland and tree styling narrative I am hoping to achieve. I will do this by shooting in more dense wood areas.

Hannah Saltdean Shoot:

This week Hannah and I took advantage of the sunny weather and headed down to salt dean beach to take some pictures of the beach in good light. As this shoot was spontaneous my planning was limited but I went with an Alice in Wonderland inspired context in mind. Posing Hannah as if she had fallen onto the rock, or was lying down dreaming on them. I also wanted to experiment with the concept of brining the inside outside. Positioning Hannah on a vintage rug. In reflection better future planning would allow me to put more consideration into the shoots styling and working out how the model could interact with the environment better.

London Fashion Week AW/23

OXFAM X Ebay

Show preperation –

Prior to the show I was able to visit the Studio where the fittings where taking place. Looking at the wide selection of clothing and process behind getting the looks together was really refreshing. There was a great sense of personal touch to the styling with models able to pick out items that they feel reflect their identity and personal style. All the pieces were taken from Oxfam shops as well as the main warehouse, with assistaed curation by renowned stylist Bay Garnet, who had a very free, calm and experimental approach to styling each look.

Final Show –

Paul & Joe

Attending the Paul and Joe AW23 show for London Fashion week gave an insight into how fashion environment can be used to enhance garments. The show was set in St John’s Smith Square a boroque church. The interior featured dark wood and chess check style black and white floor, which gave contract against the collection’s some little Bo peep fairytale esque aesthetic. The models walked to a live band led by a whistler which was a unqiue trance like sound, adding to the sense of escapism in the whimsical colleciton. Researching into how the Paris based brand defines its’ identity the word “playful” was frequent, it was interesting to see how this was shown in music and exaggerated styling. The AW23 show gave an insight into how through sound, and location can be used to help communicate the concept behind the collection and brand, breathing life into the clothing and creating story.

Work in Progress Exhibition Reflection

I found the work in progress exhibition really benifitical in seeing how we engage with work in an exhbition space and how different art can be interpreted in different spaces.

For my wip I wanted to encapsulate  my interest in fashion photography with an early stage image from the investigation project and introduce layering of natural objects, I did this by creating a frame from undyed strings and sticks, to show the relationship and layering between the nature to human touch to digital and reintroducing the sticks over the top.I wanted this to be tactile so much as visual, allowing the viewer to touch the sticks as if they are stepping into the picture. The inlucisivty of touch and the natural world is something I feel could be improved by working using a larger scale.

Continue using natural objects but within the garmenet styling within the shoot its self looking at the concept and trned of “Scavenged Beauty” that according to WGSN has developed from Mudlarking a niche activity that became popular during the Covid-Pandemic. Old found objects to create new things – using what we have – digging for exisiting objects to find unique ones.

First FMP Group Tutorial and 2023 Day back

Today we met in our tutorial groups to discuss our ideas and reflect on our thoughts post Christmas break.

Discussing our ideas and what we are all wanted to get out of our group tutorials helped to wipe down a clean slate moving into FMP.

My key point was support and the contribution of fresh ideas and discussion to avoid getting buried and have blinkers on one idea, to stop me from limiting my concept.

To Do This Week:

  • 2 Reference Points
  • Ellie Tsatsou Podcast episode 2

Things I have been enjoying researchin this week:

How can I link this to Fashion and my ideas?

Tuesday 29th Tutorial and Reflection

After my tutorial today I feel I have joined together the dots of my ideas to for a more finalised idea that combines my interests. This being looking at niche pass times, habits and hobbies. Through storytelling and a Tim Walker dreamlike Aesthetic.

Alice In Wonderland:

Alongside my fashion comms investiagtion I have been conducting research for my HCS essay, to answer the question:

How Has Lewis Carroll’s book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland impacted Fashion Photography in the last 20 years?

Within this I have been looking at the themes within the book of escapism and how it is this aesthetic and theme that makes the book relatable to this day 150 years since it was first published. As the human imagination is timeless and adapts to all periods – and photographers create interepretaions of there time based on current events and the orignal aesthetic of Alice, woodland, countryside, distortion and scale.

My research into Alice in Wonderland has made me consider how I can reflect current times and take classic aesthetics within literature to form my own response to escapism today through looking at how individuals escape reality today – through my storytelling narrative.

Inturpretations of Aiice through time, original Alice Liddell – John Tenniells Illustration, Disney’s portrayal, Tim Burton’s Alice.

Going Down the Rabbit hole:

One of the key motifs from the book is the idea of going down the rabbit hole. A visualisation that is in the vocabularies  of many today. To relfect The idea of mentally spiralling, falling deep into thought – detatching from reality. A before its time of speaking openly about mental illness reflection.

The idea of rabbit holes more visually are something I would like to explore within my FMP. Crossing over ideas of community, going down your own paths and escaping the surface level within them. Deeper meaningful interests we have to dig and think for. Visual community idea.
