Exploring trans power

A new book by a University of Brighton graduate seeks to redefine ‘trans’ as a distinct identity with its own “power and strength”.

Juno Roche, a trans writer and campaigner, will release Trans Power: Own Your Gender in October. It is available to pre-order on Amazon now: https://amzn.to/2JZfyV3

Juno interviewed prominent figures in the trans community such as Travis Alabanza, Kate Bornstein, Josephine Jones, Glamrou and E-J Scott to highlight the diversity of trans identities and experiences.

Of the inspiration behind the book, Juno said: “Following on from my first book ‘Queer Sex’, I felt there was much more ground to be explored, the edges of gender where trans identities breathe easily and grow.

“I wanted to speak to more people, to listen to others’ experiences of their gender and their identity in relation to trans.”

The aim of Trans Power, added Juno, is to “proudly celebrate the complexities and brilliance of trans identities and to frame my trans-ness as the aspirational highpoint of my life”.

Juno graduated from the University of Brighton in Critical Fine Art Practice. Of her time at the University, Juno said: “I learnt to explore, to take creative risks and to accept that dead-ends are full of answers and never a waste of time or energy. I discovered joy in philosophical and critical thinking.”

Juno went on to found Trans Workers UK and the Trans Teachers Network, and be listed on the Independent’s Rainbow List in 2015 and 2016. She received the 2015 NUT Blair Peach Award for her campaign ‘Why Trans Teachers Matter’. She regularly contributes to publications including The Guardian and Vice.
