Deepak takes international prize for volunteering

The University of Brighton Alumni Association comprises more than 150,000 graduates worldwide. We love hearing from our international students about the impact their education in Brighton has had on their lives. Deepak Kumar Baruah (Public Administration MA 2015) joined the University of Brighton as a mature student and has put his degree to great use since returning to India.

On 4 December, Deepak was presented with the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Sadbhavana Award at a ceremony in Guwahati in India. The award was for outstanding services, achievement and contribution to society by the Modern Immense Need Development Society, New Delhi (India).

Besides working full-time at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Deepak has been working on an honorary basis as a Member for the Juvenile Justice Board for Kamrup (Metro) district, appointed by the Government of Assam (India). In this role, he looks after the cases of juveniles in conflict with the law (under 18-year-olds) and works for their safe custody, rehabilitation and all-round development in line with the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015.

Deepak was a recipient of one of the university’s international scholarships for new full-time international postgraduate taught-degree students and he attributes his success to this opportunity. Deepak said: “When I came back to my home country India, I felt very honoured when the Government of Assam appointed me as a Member, Juvenile Justice Board (a statutory legal body of the government as per the Supreme Court of India) because of my UK experience and education at the University of Brighton.”
