National Mentoring Month

This January, we celebrate all our amazing mentors and hear about one alum’s experience.

January is National Mentoring Month, and we’re fortunate at the University of Brighton that so many give their time so generously to guide and inspire the next generation, including those from our amazing alumni community.

We are so thankful to every single one of them and wish to take a moment to share our appreciation.

Brighton alum inspiring the next generation

Alum Alistair Charles shares why he wanted to give back and his experience on the mentoring programme:

“I studied at the University of Brighton, completing my MBA in the mid-1990s, and have remained connected to the Alumni Association ever since. When I became aware of the University’s need for mentors, it felt like a meaningful opportunity to put my skills and experience to practical use.”

“As a first-generation Brit with Caribbean immigrant parents, I experienced firsthand how limiting the absence of mentoring can be – particularly when navigating unfamiliar academic, cultural, and professional environments.”

“Throughout my commercial and educational career, this insight was repeatedly reinforced: timely guidance can significantly accelerate confidence, clarity, and self-belief. That combination of personal experience and professional observation strongly motivated me to get involved.”

Mentoring can be a reciprocal experience

“Through the Momentum Mentoring and Recruitment Ready programmes, I was matched with candidates whose needs aligned well with my background. Over nearly two years, the experience has been genuinely reciprocal.

“Mentees have developed greater focus, confidence, and readiness for next steps, while I have benefited from fresh perspectives, challenged assumptions, and the discipline of reflective practice.”

Advice for anyone consider becoming a mentor

“For anyone considering mentoring, my advice is simple: approach it with humility and commitment. Effective mentoring is rarely about providing answers; it is about listening deeply, asking thoughtful questions, and creating a safe space for growth.”

“If you stay curious, assume less, and remain open to learning, mentoring becomes not just impactful for others, but deeply rewarding for yourself.”

Thanking our mentors

“I would like to extend a huge thank you to Alistair and all our wonderful mentors. Mentors are positive role models who work with aspirational students, supporting them to achieve their employability goals. We are so lucky at Brighton to have such committed and talented mentors.” – Social Mobility and Mentoring Manager, Beth Thomas-Hancock.
