Loneliness in reflection.
The notion of looking back on times with a sense of longing for what once was; A need for connection within the present that at first is found through reconnecting with the past. However, the un-escaping knowledge that the moment is long gone cannot help but reappear. A longing for relationships that no longer exist, a last memory of someone important or a wish for a moment of embracing contentment. Memories which are hard to let go but ultimately are fading away, the reality of the moment falling into the depth and the feelings from the present taking hold.
My work looks at capturing these ideas through the figurative exploration of atmosphere. Creating scenes that address the longing associated with reflection on loss, whilst confronting the rose-tinted view of what once was. I explore suggestive imagery which does not rely on the physical reality of the figure but rather the imposed emotions of which the moment represents. Using the atmosphere within the painting to fill a projection of myself, letting this reality of the figure fade, an inevitable consequence of living in the past. Suggesting the impermanent fragility of relationships through the handling of paint: light transparent layers that can be replaced or wiped away with a change of mind.
