Statement
Urban landscapes are an interest of the everyday, which we are surrounded by and Brighton particularly, exposes a strong sense of individuality through rich contrasting colours with abodes arranged neatly alongside one another. Through relief printing and painting i want to reflect the positive, warm feeling the houses in Brighton emit. I look at colour and space and place a high level of importance on negative and positive space to enhance details which are too often overlooked by the everyday voyeur.
Taking direct influence from my environment in Brighton of the bright colour and unique buildings, i create city scapes that build from my own intrinsic connections and interests chosen through the careful selection of composition and an unnaturalistic vivid colour palette to transform a known scene. My practice reflects on our everyday changing environment and the relationship between us and the city, recently highlighting the isolation of the city in lockdown represented by solemn empty scapes.
In my exhibition, one of the goals i hope to achieve is immersing the viewer in my work by transforming the gallery space, through creating an illusion that places the viewer in the street amongst the buildings by having one room full of large wall sized buildings. The remaining gallery space will consist of compositions of the same subject matter built through varying processes.
