We are delighted to announce that world-leading physicist Professor Alison Bruce from the Advanced Engineering Centre has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Institute of Physics Ernest Rutherford Medal and Prize for her ground-breaking work on studying atomic nuclei.
Prof Bruce now joins a celebrated group of past recipients, including Nobel laureates Niels Bohr, John Cockcroft (after whom a University of Brighton building is named), and Peter Higgs, among others.
The award acknowledges Prof Bruce’s outstanding body of work aimed at understanding the shapes and symmetries in atomic nuclei, achieved through innovative gamma-ray spectroscopic techniques. Her research has contributed significantly to the understanding of the forces and structures within the nucleus.
Prof Bruce was keen to emphasise the collaborative nature of her work, noting the vital contributions of students and post-doctoral researchers at Brighton:
I would very much like to thank my students and post-doctoral researchers at Brighton for the enjoyable and fruitful collaborations.
We are immensely proud of Prof Bruce’s achievements and her invaluable contributions to nuclear physics, mentorship, and global collaboration. This recognition also highlights the importance of collaboration and mentorship in research, values that lie at the heart of the AEC.
