Academics within the AEC have recently completed a consultancy project with local company Body Rocket. The aim of this study was to advise on the aerodynamics aspects of measurement related to the “Aerohead” pitot-based bicycle sensor apparatus developed by Body Rocket, and was carried out by Dr Nicolas Miche, Dr Timur Zaripov, and Dr Idil Fenercioglu Aydin.

This study was divided in two main parts:

  1. Investigating rider and device position effects on the overall flow and pressure fronts of a moving bicycle via 2-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.
  2. Analyzing pitot sensor aerodynamics behaviour and calibration through experimental tests of the device in a wind tunnel.

This work was funded between Body Rocket and the EU BRITE Access To Expertise scheme.
