Guardian writer Barney Ronay visits sports journalism students

The Guardian’s chief sports writer, Barney Ronay, visited BA and MA Sports Journalism students last month to discuss routes into the industry and the skills needed to succeed in the industry.

Ronay, author of How Foobtall (Nearly) Came Home, The Manager and Any Chance of a Game? has worked at multiple world cups, Olympic Games and is about to go to Australia to cover The Ashes.

It’s fantastic for our students to have one of our industry’s top writers come to our newsroom and share their story,” said Owen Evans, MA Sports Journalism course leader.

To return the favour, MA Sports Journalism students Ed Mace, Ishan Athawle and Arnav Prabhu Kholkar helped to produce the launch episode of The Square One cricket podcast, featuring Ronay alongside University of Brighton’s Dr James Wallis and ex-Kent and Nottinghamshire cricketer Rob Ferley.

Square One operates one of the country’s largest indoor cricket centres at the Falmer campus.

“Arnav, Ed, and I had an amazing time producing and editing the podcast,” said Ishan.

It was an honour to work with a combination of a reputed journalist, an academic, and an ex-pro all at once. We hope to be involved with future projects too.”

Ed, Arnav and Ishan assisted with research, audio production and recording, gaining hands-on experience in podcast journalism.
