Seagulls and soundbites: Sports Journalists enjoy a week of Brighton and Hove Albion FC (BHAFC) wins and guest speakers

Sports Journalism students reported live from the press box during BHAFC’s women’s and men’s home victories at The Amex, while also hearing from two influential industry speakers.

The week began with the Albion women’s 4–1 win over Leicester City, where students produced match reports, interviews and social content from the American Express Community Stadium. The international cohort used their language skills to secure exclusive interviews with Colombian international Manuela Vanegas and Japan’s Kiko Seike, offering unique insights unavailable to most reporters.

“I had an incredible week, one where I feel really lucky to have covered as much sport as I have done,” Ed Mace, MA Sports Journalism student, said on LinkedIn.

“My fellow MA Sports Journalists and I got the opportunity to sit in the press box at the Amex Stadium to cover the WSL (Women’s Super League) game between Brighton and Leicester which was a fantastic experience.”

Mace added: “It was then back to the Amex to cover Brighton v Brentford yesterday. Another amazing game with late drama.”

Mace was joined other undergraduate and postgraduate students as the group welcomed guest speakers Karen Dobres, author, Pitch Invasion: My story as a feminist on a football club board and Marios Sfantos, co-founder, Athens Women’s Football Summit, who delivered a Q&A promoting diversity and women’s football.

“Combining practical reporting and academic issues is the ideal balance for our students,” said Owen Evans, MA Sports Journalism and MA Journalism course leader, ‘so covering the women’s game on Sunday and following that up with Karen and Marios’ Q&A on Wednesday worked perfectly.”

The week concluded at the Amex Stadium as the students covered the Albion men’s 2–1 Premier League win over Brentford, gaining live match-day reporting experience in a top-flight environment.
