In the lead up to our 2025 MA Show, we’re celebrating the creativity and talent of our graduating masters students by sharing their stories and showcasing their incredible work. We spoke with Sequential Design/Illustration MA student Hoang Ngoc Mai Pham about the course, their influences and advice to their younger self.
Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences
My work is often inspired by what I observe and my personal experiences, mostly focusing on family and our connection with it. I’ve always kept a bit to myself, so I have a lot of time to overthink everything. Then I cry and make work.

What made you choose your course?
It’s been a long journey to find a path I truly want to pursue, and that path is illustration. Reflecting on my creative process, I realised I enjoy telling stories through both text and image, but I wasn’t sure which format I wanted to work in. Since Brighton offers a course that focuses on storytelling through sequences, which is focused enough but still gives me room to explore, I decided to choose this course.
Can you tell us about your favourite part of your studies and how it helped the development of you and your practice?
I just love that the school has so many resources, from workshops and studios to lectures, talks and the libraries! I used to feel tired of self-learning because I often didn’t know what to do next. But then I came here and found the process enjoyable. I realised I can continue learning and researching even after the course ends.

What does Brighton mean to you now?
Brighton feels a bit like home now. I feel safe here.
Can you tell us your plans after graduation?
I’ll try submitting my work to publishers and competitions. I’ll also polish my portfolio and hopefully kickstart my freelance career.
Finally, if you could give your younger self any advice about studying a Masters, what would it be?
Don’t worry, things will be fine. It will take you time to adjust to the new environment, new lifestyle, new everything. So be patient, and enjoy your time here.
