Frank Smith, CEO of Matchroom was welcomed to the Newsroom at Moulsecoomb to share his expertise and experience of staging major events, including world-title boxing fights.
The visit was the latest in a series of the course’s Guest Lecturer Masterclasses, in which key industry figures share their knowledge and advice, helping students to develop as sports journalists and prepare them for their careers.
The students got a fascinating behind-the-scenes look from Frank at how big events are organised, with a focus on the role of the sports media. They also found out what it’s like working with high-profile figures in global sport, including former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua.
Frank said: “It was an absolute pleasure to visit the University of Brighton and talk to the students. At Matchroom we’re always looking to give back to the community, so it was a honour to meet the students, hear their ideas and engage with the next generation of fight fans.”
L6 student Kieran Gallop said: “It was excellent to have Frank come in. He gave a real insight into the business and promotional side of sport and how that correlates with sports media.”
As part of the lecture, students also completed a practical exercise, devising a media plan for a hypothetical world title bout. Frank was on hand to provide valuable feedback and guidance.
Students also used the opportunity to ask Frank a series of questions about the sports business.
BA(Hons) in Sports Journalism Course Leader Adam Powley said: “We were delighted with Frank’s visit. The Masterclasses provide students with information and knowledge that will be highly relevant for a range of module assessments, benefitting their overall learning and development.”
