Graduates 2024: Callum Howat-Tracy: MA Sequential Design/Illustration

Brighton is a wonderful community of varied artists from all kinds of walks of life. The place is literally littered with art, it’s hard not to catch the creative bug here!

Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

I am a watercolour illustrator/animator primarily bringing watercolour paintings to life with looped ambient animation (as well as dogs and birds). I was a big fan of The Wind in the Willows as a child, and I think it has left me with a lasting adoration for particular English scenes and landscapes; as an adult facing a socio-economic crisis, I try to depict that same wistfulness but with an honesty about our current run-down infrastructure. I am very much inspired by Giorgio De Chirico’s metaphysical plaza series and am in love with the watercolour landscapes of Albert Namatjira.

Can you tell us a bit about what brought you to doing a postgraduate degree and this course in particular?

Having been out of education for a while, I wanted to return to the idea of developing my practice and really challenge myself. Claiming back so much lost time and putting it into my own abilities has been a wonderful experience.

Can you tell us about your favourite part of your studies and how it helped the development of you and your practice.

My favourite part of my studies has probably been meandering around topic to topic while keeping a focus on technical ability.

Were there any staff who particularly inspired you?

All the staff on the course have been fantastic and really encouraging. Big shout out to Ottilie Hainsworth and Louise Colborne though.

What does Brighton mean to you now?

Brighton is a wonderful community of varied artists from all kinds of walks of life. The place is literally littered with art, it’s hard not to catch the creative bug here!

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I don’t really want to stop the momentum, so I’ve got a few projects lined up to continue my technical development and work on my portfolio.

Finally what would you say to anyone considering post-graduate study?

If you want to go on a self-directed journey of study and development, absolutely do it. I think in some ways education can become quite drawn out toward the end of degree-level study, but post-graduate study really helps you reclaim the love of learning.

What sort of work did you have in your portfolio to show to get on the course

Did you need a set idea before starting the course?
