Hi Amy. Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences
My work in fashion centres around recognising and promoting the sustainable potential of innovative fashion practices. Notably digital fashion as well as the advancements in bio fashion. My inspirations for the photography element of my project were artists such as Solve Sundsbo and Jon Emmony who blend photography with digital techniques to create dynamic and intriguing imagery. For my final major project, I created a creative agency called Proof of Existence which explored how the future of fashion and sustainability within fashion lies within the ‘Phygital” (a blend between the physical world and the digital space/Metaverse). I endeavour to build connection and tell stories through VR Immersive technology to foster a deeper understanding of fashion and sustainable designers making it more likely that the consumer will become more conscious within their purchasing habits. I collaborated with sustainable fashion designer Tom Saville to construct ‘The Holo-Land’, a visual representation of his fashion design universe. I collaborated with 3D designer Krish Sadh to bring this vision into the 3D/VR digital space with hopes to nurture connection through immersion.
What made you choose your course?
I knew that I wanted to study fashion, but I was unsure as to what specifically I wanted to do. Fashion communications enabled me to explore a wide range of fashion related topics. I also really liked how it was a creative course paired business studies element.
Can you tell us about your favourite part of your studies and how it helped the development of you and your practice.
I have really enjoyed the freedom with which I have been able to explore each discipline within my course and to really discover what and how I like to work as a creative.
Can you tell us about any staff who particularly inspired you?
My initial introduction into the digital fashion space was encouraged by Rachael Taylor who really inspired me to look into the various possibilities of the future of fashion which is a main pillar to my work.
What does Brighton mean to you now?
Brighton will always hold a special place in my heart as I felt that I changed and grew dramatically as a person throughout my years at University. I met some incredible people and have some treasured memories from my time here and will take that with me going forward.
Can you tell us your plans after graduation?
My final major project involved creating an agency so I hope to take what I have started to create here at University into a real life context and start my own business.
Finally if you could give your 17 year old self any advice about going to university what would it be?
Don’t feel pressure to follow what everyone else is doing. Even though it is hard, everyone else is doing something completely different to you so focus on what you want and how you’re going to achieve it.
