Graduates 2024: Hamish Huxley-Edwards: Games Art and Design

“Being around creative individuals has been incredibly eye-opening and inspiring. Seeing their work and sharing knowledge with one another has greatly contributed to my own development and practice.”

Hi Hamish. Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

My work primarily revolves around digital media, with a focus on crafting 3D environments and video games. I utilise software such as Blender and Unity to bring my creations to life. Much of my inspiration stems from video games and design movements that captivate me, such as Bioshock with its unique dystopian Art Deco environments.

What made you choose your course?

Although I had never visited Brighton prior to attending university here, I was drawn to the idea of living by the sea. The course, Games Art & Design, particularly fascinated me because I knew I wanted to study and design games, but at the time, not many universities offered similar courses focusing on video games.

Can you tell us about your favourite part of your studies and how it helped the development of you and your practice?

My favourite part of my studies has been the opportunity to interact with creative and interesting individuals who are also passionate about similar subjects. Being around them has been incredibly eye-opening and inspiring. Seeing their work and sharing knowledge with one another has greatly contributed to my own development and practice.

Can you tell us about any staff who particularly inspired you?

I’ve found my course leader, Darius, particularly inspiring. He consistently presents us with exciting opportunities and provides motivating feedback and teaching that has greatly influenced my learning experience.

What does Brighton mean to you now?

Brighton initially felt daunting, moving far from home to a city I’d never visited before. However, after just a few months, I’ve come to cherish it. The kindness of the people I’ve met here have made me feel at home, and I’ve already built meaningful connections and Brighton is where I’m starting a new chapter of my life 🙂

Can you tell us your plans after graduation?

After graduation, my plan is to stay in Brighton and work full-time. While I don’t have a specific role lined up in the games industry at the moment, I am actively exploring opportunities and remain committed to pursuing a career in game design or related fields.
