Sport journalism and journalism students enjoyed a special guest speaker session from rising star of sport media, Aymen Babar.
Aymen, an award-winning broadcaster and reporter who now works for Sky Sports, discussed her career and the wider media industry, focusing on issues of diversity, inclusion, and equality.
As a recent graduate from Cambridge University, she related her experiences in Higher Education in addition to a range of industry settings she has worked in, examining discrimination and how it can be addressed to change and improve the modern media.
The session was presented as part of the Sport in Context module, and thus closely aligns to student learning and development. Aymen was joined by University of Brighton alumni Andrew Ducille, Operations Director at the Black Collective of Media in Sport (BCOMS), a campaign and education group that works to promote diversity in the sport media, with which Aymen also works.
BA Sport Journalism course leader Adam Powley said: “Aymen delivered a really interesting and thought-provoking session about the media and how it needs to change to reflect and better serve more diverse audiences.
“Her professional expertise gave an invaluable insight into a topic that is hugely relevant to students’ understanding of the media industry and its wider contexts.”
Students and teaching staff engaged in a fascinating discussion and met individually with Aymen afterwards – thus acting on her ‘top career tip’ about the importance of networking.
