Graduates 2023: Jaime Walker: Photography

“Trust your intuition. There is no right or wrong decision, they’re just different.”

Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

My main creative practice is Photography and I work with black & white film as well as colour, and I make my prints by hand using darkroom processes. My work focuses on exploring conceptual ideas, and I express my explorations by using my immediate surroundings. The natural world and the everyday are repeat subjects and inspirations in my work, and my formal meditation practise and on-going spiritual journey often guides my creative process.

How have you found your course and what made you choose it?

I’ve really enjoyed my course and I have very few complaints. I chose Brighton because I know I loved it as a place, and I wanted to make sure I was living somewhere I was happy to be. I also chose the Photography BA degree at Brighton because it included a historical & critical aspect, which I was interested in and not every Photography course offered that.

Was the location of your course in Brighton more important than you thought it would be?

Being in Brighton has definitely informed my work, as I like to use my immediate surroundings in my photographs. The work I have made throughout my course looks the way it does in part because I utilized the nearby towns and spaces near to me, such as the coastline, and Stanmer Park.

What are your plans after graduation?

My immediate plans after graduation are to have a relaxed and quiet summer and to give time to hobbies & crafts I didn’t have the space for whilst studying. Slightly longer term, I hope to go to India to begin yoga teacher training, learn to drive, and to go travelling outside of Europe.

If you could give your 16 year old self any advice about going to University what would it be?

It’s ok if your education journey doesn’t look like the conventional one. Give yourself some space and time between educational ventures to integrate what you’ve learnt and how you feel about it. Most importantly, there is no rush to do anything! Trust your intuition. There is no right or wrong decision, they’re just different.
