Architecture student Mario Alcantara Monteiro, has been awarded a prize for excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for a project on Volks Railway, the world’s oldest functioning electric railway.
Mario was awarded the Degree Prize which celebrates the talent of architecture students at the University. The judges were impressed with Mario’s project, which focused on a pavilion on Madeira Drive to showcase the maintenance of Volk’s Railway. Mario envisaged the pavilion as a public space and transport hub to bring life to the area. The RIBA judges unanimously selected Mario’s drawing, praising its ‘strong bold graphic style’.
