Student teachers gain PSHE Association accreditation

A group of second year student primary teachers have been accredited with the PSHE Association Certificate of Professional Development for PSHE teachers.

The PSHE Association is the national body for PSHE education, and supports over 60,000 teachers and schools with resources, training, guidance and advice.

The 16 students achieved the accreditation by teaching topics such as money management, mental health and wellbeing, disability education and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Education. To gain the accreditations, they had to plan, teach and reflect upon their teaching against the PSHE Association’s 10 principles of effective PSHE education.

The students taught year groups from reception to year 6 in a local primary school and the school were so impressed they have asked for Brighton student teachers to return again next year.

Faye Worthy-Pauling, Senior Lecturer in primary education said: “The school fed back that both pupils and teachers loved their lessons and the learning that took place in class was a credit to the student’s PSHE knowledge.

“Completing the accreditation takes a lot of work, but their reflections demonstrated a thorough understanding of effective PSHE teaching in an Early years and Primary education setting.”

This is the second year Brighton primary teachers have gained the PSHE Associations accreditation, and it is firmly embedded in our courses to acknowledge the importance of the subject.

Sarah Gabbett from the Association said: “It is clear how committed your trainees are to developing their teaching knowledge and skills within PSHE education. Their effective reflections were well supported by evidence from their varied teaching experiences and extracts from their assignments.

“All showed progression in their knowledge and understanding of the subject-specific pedagogies. Congratulations!”
