Exhibition celebrates art and design in the classroom

Student teachers on our Secondary Art and Design PGCE held an exhibition in the University’s Checkland building at Falmer to celebrate the end of their course.

The student teachers were asked to select three projects they had planned and delivered during their school-based training. Their decisions were based on schemes that they felt best represented who they were as a developing art and design teacher.

A private view offered the opportunity for the student teacher’s mentors and colleagues in school, as well as family and friends to get together and see the fantastic work they had helped their students achieve. It was also a way for to say thank you to everyone involved in supporting their journey to becoming an art and design teacher.

Art and Design PGCE course lead, Julie Howard, said: “The variety of creative artwork on display is a true credit to the trainees and the departments they have worked with.

“The exhibition is a great way for us to share new project ideas and subject expertise amongst our colleagues in the partnership.”

The exhibition has created a real buzz with visitors to the building and has been commented on by many who have observed the creative talent. It has been wonderful to see how the student teachers have used their unique talents as artists to really inspire their own students in the classroom.

Julie added: “It gives us all confidence that the next generation of students will be truly inspired as these fantastic teachers facilitate their own artistic journey.”
