ECR Newsletter: January 2025

Dear ECR Community,

I wish you a happy new year and hope you had a good, restful break over the winter holidays.

With the start of the new year, I want to share some exciting events, training and development opportunities that are coming up in the next couple of weeks/ months across the University.

Events

  • In order to embrace exchange and encounters among the ECR community, we are holding a research roundtable with a focus on interdisciplinary research on 29 January 2025 13.00-14.00 (Cockcroft 808, Moulsecoomb Campus) Whether you’re new to interdisciplinary research and want to find out more – or you have some ideas that you would like to pursue and would welcome some guidance – come along and discover how to get your research with others off the ground. For registration follow this link: https://forms.office.com/e/hj2aJ5E9UT
  • After the great Inaugural lecture by Professor Melanie Flint in December, keep your eye out for the next upcoming dates. Lectures are free, but book early to avoid disappointment. Next one coming up is on 19 February 2025 by Professor Shahaduz Zaman – “What is a good death? Decolonising end-of-life care”.
  • Open Research Week 2025 (Monday 24 to Thursday 27 February) is a collaboration between University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Edge Hill University, and the University of Essex. This programme celebrates and promotes open research for researchers and colleagues who support open research and discusses new, developing and current practice. Events are free, but do require you to register to reserve your place. Attendees are reminded that both bookings and sessions are hosted externally. Find out more about Open Research Week 2025 here

Training

  • Introduction to R for Statistical Analysis 21 February 2025, 11.00-1.00. This hands-on workshop is designed for doctoral students and University staff, whether you are a complete beginner or looking to refresh your skills. Content will address the R environment and how to navigate its features, plus the core concepts and syntax of R and basic operations. Additionally, you will learn how to perform simple statistical analyses using R, such as descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. This workshop is suitable for those with no prior experience with R as well as those who have some knowledge but need a refresher. There are 20 spaces in this workshop and attendance is in-person only. To book your place, please email researcherdevelopment@brighton.ac.uk
  • Nvivo Training in March 10-11.3.25 Due to limited places please register via researcherdevelopment@brighton.ac.uk This training always proves popular, but has high dropouts, so a waitlist will be kept in case of any cancellations in advance. If there are no-shows on the day, we’ll email everyone on the waitlist on a first-come,first-served basis to fill the spots, so it may be helpful to be on campus on the first day. Have your say on what is most important for you to learn about the qualitative analysis tool by answering this short survey.

Development

  • Research Poster Workshop and Competition The university’s annual Research Poster Competition will be held as part of Research and Knowledge Exchange Week 31 March to 3 April 2025. Enter the competition for a chance to win money towards your research costs. Leading up to the Research and Knowledge Exchange week, a workshop by Professor Lesley Murray, taking place on the 4 February 2025, 1.30-3.30PM, will get you thinking about how to visually present your research and pick up some practical tips in time to enter the competition. This workshop will cover the process of producing a research poster, including the effective communication of your ideas as well as use of layout, design and graphics. We will show you lots of examples of research posters across various disciplines and you will have the opportunity to get some hands-on experience and share your poster plans. This workshop is suitable for postgraduate researchers and research staff alike. To book your place, please email ResearcherDevelopment@brighton.ac.uk
  • Finally just a reminder about deadlines for R&KE Initiatives:
  • Research and Knowledge Exchange Development Fund – 24 January 2025; Research and Knowledge Exchange Excellence Fund – 7 February 2025 Visit the Research and Knowledge Exchange Initiatives SharePoint page for more information and check the Impact Acceleration Account Sharepoint page to see if you are eligible for these funds which are still open for applications.

Do remember to go to StaffCentral and search for events, selecting the Research category, to see a snapshot of what’s coming up for the timeframe you select. Here’s the overview of events added to this centrally available calendar for research until the end of March.

Please get in touch with any feedback, comments or information to be shared with the wider community of ECRs around the University. I wish you all the best starting into 2025!

All the best,

Barbara
