Inspired by the movie ‘To the bone’ I decided to focus my initial illustrations on body image and the physiological effects it can have on women. I studied images of women of all body shapes and decided to make various protest illustrations to highlight the importance of sending the correct message to young girls and women.

 

I recently attended a bookbinding workshop where we developed our multi-section bookbinding skills by adding a Swiss cover. I also experimented with foil lettering, I liked the grainy texture that was created using the bookbinding material as a base and the foil letters on top. I could potentially use these as fonts for illustrations.

In this session we were introduced to using zinc plates, this workshop was primarily focused on how to use the plate to create texture and marks. I learned that the plate is very sensitive to touch and the slightest touch will create a mark, also with the plate you can use different materials to create a variety of lines and shade. Including experimenting with white spirit, blowing bubbles and many other techniques.

This workshop specifically focused on how type and image work together to depict a narrative. This exercise allowed me experiment with composition and size. I was also able to create images quickly.

My initial idea for the manifesto project was to focus on body image and the impact the media has on the way we view ourselves. I was looking into protest art and more specifically the hand painted placards. I decided to trial with type and explore the impact it can have on meaning. I also trialled with creating mark making and intended to scan them in to make illustrations.
