Friston Forest

Friston Forest is one of the hidden gems I have discovered since I started exploring some of the local walks around Brighton and Hove. The forest covers over 6000 acres of land so it is a great way to immerse yourself in nature and explore the countryside.

A vast expanse of trees greets you as you enter the forest, and if visiting on a sunny day the sun will stream through the canopy. The air is fresh and crisp, and the sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling underfoot create a sense of tranquillity. The forest has a network of trails and paths that allow you to explore it at your own pace.

Trees at Friston Forest

One of the most popular walks is the Forest Way Trail. This 10-mile trail runs through the heart of the forest and is perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in the beauty of the forest. The trail is well-marked, and there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way. If you are visiting on a wet dat, make sure to bring wellies, it can get very muddy!

If you’re looking for a shorter walk, there are plenty of other trails to choose from. The Short Loop is a great option for families with young children, while the Green Ride offers a gentle walk through the forest.

The forest is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, badgers, and foxes. As you walk through the forest, keep an eye out for these creatures and listen to the sounds, you may even spot some rare birds such as the nightingale or the woodpecker.

There are a range of habitats that can be found whilst exploring the forest, from dense woodland to open glades. There are also a variety of tree species, including oak, beech, and birch. The leaves are a beautiful tapestry of orange and gold in the autumn, so I would suggest visiting on a sunny autumn day if you can!

In the woods!

One of the highlights of walking in Friston Forest is the views. As you climb to the top of the hills, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the coast and beyond. There also a view that allows you to see the Litlington White Horse, however, you will only see it in the distance, the view is not the best out there!

Going on a walk in Friston Forest is a wonderful way to connect with nature and explore the beauty of East Sussex. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a family looking for a fun day out, the forest has something for everyone. I loved my day there, and I am sure you will too!
