VI-Suite v0.6 – Sun Path

I’ve just uploaded a video tutorial for sun path and simple shadowing analysis in v0.6.

The video covers sun path creation and the features of Blender’s viewport shading for single and multiple sun shadow creation.

There’s a couple of things I forgot to mention in the video. One is that when creating a new sun path you’ll notice that a new collection is created called ‘SunPath’ and the sun path object is placed within it. As mentioned in the previous video you should avoid putting your own geometry into this collection. Another is that the colours of the sun path base can also be altered with the material properties associated with the sun path base object.

And one final thing. The time used for the sun position is local solar time, not clock time. Any local daytime saving, or time zone adjustment, should be factored in by the user.

Link to the video is below and to those who celebrate it I wish you a very Merry Christmas.

  1. Hi Ryan,

I recently uploaded v0.6 to use in Blender v2.83 and I’m having a problem with the date and the suns rising and setting.

I have set up a sun path with longitude and latitude for a site in Wiltshire and when I look at sunrise/sunset for the equinoxes I have to adjust the date by around 10 days in order to get the sun to rise and set due east and due west as it would on those days. It’s also the same for the solstices where the amount of daylight on those days is around 14.5hrs as opposed to 16hrs.

I’m very new to Blender so not sure if I’m missing something or if it’s something else. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

  2. Hi Ryan,

Please ignore my last message as I seem to have resolved the issue, my apologises think it was due to my lack of experience in using blender.

I have managed to get the sun to rise and set due east and west at the equinoxes but have noticed that shadows are only cast when the sun has reached an altitude of 5.8˚, any lower and the base goes dark. Is there a way to get the sun to cast shadows down to at least 1˚ above the horizon?

    Thanks
    Rob

    • There is a little cog icon on the right hand side of the shadow setting in Blender. Click on this and make ‘shadow shift’ zero.

  3. Nice Post. I really appreciated that, Hope it will be helpful for others who search for the best resource about it. Keep continuing to share this type of post.
