Shola from Nigeria shares his experience studying pharmacy at Brighton

Shola Alabi reflects on his time studying at postgraduate level in the UK. A recent graduate from our Pharmacy (OSPAP) PGDip course, Shola shares why he chose to study at the University of Brighton and how the course has influenced his future career ambitions.

Shola shares what parts of his course he most enjoyed, how he adapted to learning culture in the UK, as well as what he plans to do now that he’s graduated.

Read Shola’s Q+A with us below to find out more.

Why did you apply to study at Brighton?

“I applied to study at the University of Brighton because of the school’s strong reputation for academic support and inclusive learning environment. Also [because of] the flexibility of classes being just two days a week, as well as the location – being by the coastline in a vibrant city.”

Tell us about your experience of studying our Pharmacy OSPAP course.

“Studying on the Pharmacy (OSPAP) PGDip at Brighton was an impactful experience. I enjoyed the simulated pharmacy sessions, which offered a safe and realistic environment to apply clinical knowledge, develop communication skills and build confidence in handling real-world scenarios.

“I also enjoyed the seminars led by Lisa Knox, which were thought-provoking and challenged us to consider the moral complexities of pharmacy practice. The way she facilitated open discussions and encouraged critical thinking made me understand the human impact of our decisions and the ethical responsibilities we carry as healthcare professionals.”

How did you find studying in the UK?

“Studying in the UK was both challenging and rewarding. At first, adapting to the UK education system took some adjustment, especially in terms of self-directed learning and the emphasis on evidence-based practice. However, I appreciate the huge support from lecturers and the collaborative learning atmosphere among students from diverse backgrounds.

“The experience had given me a clear understanding of how healthcare is delivered in the UK, as well as strengthening my communication skills – particularly in working with people from different cultures.”

What are your career plans after graduation?

“I am particularly interested in working in community and hospital pharmacy settings where I can continue developing my clinical knowledge and patient-facing skills. Longer term, I see myself specialising in an area such as medicines optimisation or healthcare policy development.

“I’m passionate about patient education and improving access to healthcare, so I’d like to be in a role where I can contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes.”

What advice would you give to other international students considering studying at Brighton?

“My advice would be to come with an open mind and be ready to embrace both the academic and cultural experience.

“The university offers a supportive environment with approachable lecturers, a wide range of resources and a strong sense of community, especially for international students.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s academic support or wellbeing services, the university has a lot of resources in place.

“Make the most of the opportunity to connect with classmates from different backgrounds, as there is so much to learn from each other.”

Thank you to Shola for sharing about his time studying Pharmacy (OSPAP) PGDip at the University of Brighton. We wish you the best of luck in your future prospects!
