An Ironman race consists of a 2.4mile swim a 112mile bike ride and a 26.2mile run. It’s one of the most demanding races on the planet and pushes the body to its limit. It’s an event which requires long term preparation, sufficient nutrition an accommodation of environmental stressors and mental toughness. The ironman is becoming more popular amongst master’s athletes; Data shows participation in masters Ironman racing is increasing. In the Ironman Switzerland between 1995-1998 23% of male finishers were master’s athletes (+40 years old), by 2007-2010 48% of male finishers were master’s athletes (Stiefel et al., 2014)
This blog will be focused on one particular master’s individual world renowned chef and amateur athlete Gordon Ramsay. It will apply the physiological, biomechanical, psychological and nutritional aspects of sport science to help improve Ramsey’s performance

Introduction of Gordon Ramsay
- Born 18th of November 1966 (age 49)
- 3 Michelin stars as a chef, world renowned TV presenter
- Known for his fiery temper and use of explicit language
- He has raced in 15 marathons, three ultra-marathons, three half-Ironman’s
- He completed the “world’s toughest race” the Hawaii Ironman in 2013 in a time of 14 hours 4 mins and 48 seconds.
- However, he failed in his most recent attempt at an Ironman in 2015, having to stop during the last section of the race the 26.2 mile run.
Present
- Intends to compete in another Ironman in the future after his failure to complete the ironman in 2015. Tweeting after the race “I will be BACK”
- Also been quoted saying he “wants to run sub 12 hours”
Future
- Gordon Ramsey wishes to compete in the 2016 Hawaii Ironman and successfully finishing the race in sub 12 hour.
