In this project I’m building this blog using Edublogs/WordPress website builder, it has a range of features i can use so ill check through these and try to explain how ill use them and what they are.
Media?
Media is my uploaded content such as images and Gifs that ill be adding to the website for visuals. all uploaded media is kept in the library before i add it to posts and pages such a this one using the Add Media button in the top left.
To upload media to the website its as simple as clicking on media Add New then dragging or selecting a file thats ether in a .jpeg, .png or other accepted format.
thought the max upload size is 50MB there is only 1GB of storage available per website so Media files should be appropriately sized to prevent the website from slowing down from the storage being taken. appropriate file sizes are in low MB, specifically
- 1MB – images
- 1MB – GIF
- 10MB per min – videos
Embedding?
Embedding is a method of inserting a video into a site but having it hosted externally. this reduces reduces the memory required to load. to embed you upload your videos to a hosting site such as YouTube or Google drive and insert the ebed code given into the page.
Posts?
Posts are content with time stamps so it seems appropriate use them weekly time memos listed in a reverse chronological order from old to new so they run parallel with with the project pages each week.
Theme?
Themes are a big part when it comes to navigation and aesthetic’s website. word press has a selection of pre made themes that vary from there layout and looks.
When it came to my website Out of the themes available I have a particular liking to ones with the menu centred at the top of the page and include a large image behind the tile which I can use for to entice individuals to look further into the page as there greeted with something visually interesting. Note the photo should represent my interests or current page projects.
outlined 5 themes Theses 5 themes are ones I like In particular when it came to the options. out of theses themes I think I’ll use Garfunkel as the image spreads all across the page and posts on the home page are sorted in there own individual boxes so you can easily differentiate between them
Pages?
pages are static and have no time stamp so I’ll use them for the main content for each project.
Menus?
menus are the titles at the top of my website that take you to the different pages and posts. the menu Ive thought to include are the following.
- About – Includes a image of me and a short written introduction of myself.
- Projects – A project archive, a home for all project pages which are done weekly. Sort by date
- Posts – A post archive, a home for all posts, again done weekly. Sort to projects (likely by date)
- Plan – My planning & management – include notes, week planning and schedule.
To set the order and contents listed in the menu i used Edit Menus which is another feature listed in the dashboard under appearances. you can add pages and posts to the menu and arrange them as sub items to other pages or categories to sort them so the main menu bar is neat and intuitive for use.
example: Edit Menu to set pages as a sub item you relate it to a parent page in the page attributes when setting it up.
My Digital fabrication website?
Sketch Plan – website structure
other thoughts on website content and website organisation are included on the planning page.
Plugins
Plugins are installable programs Made by WordPress community members that provide additional features to the Site. now when it comes to my i have activated the plugin Table of Contents so i can have a table of contents on the projects page in menus as well as use certain headings as a anchor for links.
