Revision for “My Students are requesting access to my videos, why?” created on April 13, 2021 @ 12:21:07
Title | My Students are requesting access to my videos, why? |
---|---|
Content | If you recorded your videos into a place other than the module itself, students will not be able to view the video. Here's what they see:
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/09-Student-Sees-this-oops.png"><img class="wp-image-1400 aligncenter" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/09-Student-Sees-this-oops.png" alt="Blank video window, saying that access is denied" width="533" height="369" /></a>
So if you see an email from a student "Requesting Access" this is why. Your video is not actually in the module area, it is elsewhere.
<h3 id="how">Here's how to move your video to your module area, and ensure that students can see the videos.</h3>
Generally, your video is probably in your Panopto My Folder. The My Folder is a place in Panopto for your private videos. These videos are not visible to anyone other than yourself.
If you want a video in your My Folder to be visible to students, you need to move it to a place where they DO actually have access, like a module area.
First, we have to go to your My Folder. Go to the Panopto Video link, in any of your module areas (1). In the dropdown next to the folder in the page (2), click on My Folder (3).
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/002-Go-to-My-Folder.png"><img class="wp-image-1401 aligncenter" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/002-Go-to-My-Folder.png" alt="Screenshot of going to your my folder in My Studies with highlighted arrows." width="467" height="389" /></a>
Once you're in your my folder, you will need to expand the window to be fully in Panopto, rather than 'with in' My Studies. Click on the expand button in the upper right of the Panopto window.
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/003-Full-Buttons.png"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1402" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/003-Full-Buttons-1024x393.png" alt="Screenshot of the expand icon-button in Panopto" width="550" height="211" /></a>
Now that you are in the full-Panopto window, you will need to tick on the video that you wish to move to a module area, and more buttons will appear. Click on Move when you can see the button.
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/004-Move-button.png"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-1403" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/004-Move-button.png" alt="Screencapture of an unticked video, and then the video ticked. Once ticked, the move button is available." width="560" height="427" /></a>
Now that you have clicked the move button, choose where you want your video to be sent. First, click on the drop down menu (1). Then click on My Studies 20/21 (2) and choose the module in which you wish the video to appear (3).
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/006-choose-module-folder.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1405" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/006-choose-module-folder.png" alt="Screencapture of the dropdown menu, My Studies folder and a module being chosen" width="555" height="287" /></a>
Now that you've chosen, you will see where you're moving the video. If you're happy with the location, click on the large green Move button.
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/007-Move-button.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1406" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/007-Move-button.png" alt="Screencapture of the move confirmation window" width="713" height="249" /></a>
The video is now in the correct Module folder. Any student enrolled on this module will now have access to this video.
If you are simply using the Panopto Video link in the My Studies side folder to contain your videos, and for your students to access the videos, you are now done.
If you wish to re-embed the video into the module area... Go back to your Study Materials area on the module, and choose to Build Content, Item.
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/02-create-item-with-video-mashup.png"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-1407" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/02-create-item-with-video-mashup.png" alt="Screenshot of the create item area in My Studies with the name, mashup button and panopto video option highlighted." width="472" height="303" /></a>
In the Panopto Pop-out window, it will default to Choose. You can see the video you moved from your My Folder at the top of this list, choose the video by ticking it, and then scroll down the window to find the insert video button.
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/10-choose-video-and-scroll-down.png"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-1408" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/10-choose-video-and-scroll-down.png" alt="Screenshot of the choose-video popout window in My Studies" width="524" height="392" /></a>
Click on the Insert Video Button.
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/10-5-insert-button.png"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1409" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/10-5-insert-button-300x122.png" alt="insert video button screenshot" width="300" height="122" /></a>
Now the video has been placed in the Item (the yellow box) so now you can click Submit
<a href="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/11-Inserted-yellow-video-and-submit-button.png"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-1410 size-large" src="https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/teachingcontingency/files/2020/09/11-Inserted-yellow-video-and-submit-button-1024x522.png" alt="Screenshot of the create item window with the video ready to go, with a submit button highlighted." width="550" height="280" /></a>
And now the video is successfully embedded in your Study Materials area in My Studies, and your students will be able to view it.
