Inside the Venue, new BSU bar

New bar and social space opens on Moulsecoomb campus

The Venue, the new Students’ Union bar and social space, has now opened and the finishing touches to the decor are almost done. Along with the gym and pedestrian bridge, this now completes the Big Build project on the east side of Lewes Road.

Bar opening times

The Venue is open to staff as well as students and can be found at street level in front of Mithras House. Opening hours are:

  • 10am-11pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday
  • 10am-midnight, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Food and drink

Beers on tap at the VenueThe bar serves a wide range of reasonably priced soft and alcoholic drinks – including some £3 pints – with a range of craft beers provided courtesy of Beavertown Brewery. A food menu will be coming from the end of October, including breakfast rolls, burgers and pizza. There is also a pool table and air hockey for more energetic patrons.

Available for hire

The Venue has two rooms which can be booked for free for societies, birthdays and social  gatherings – email thevenue@brighton.ac.uk for more information. From November, catering can also be requested for events.

“An entirely new dimension to the campus experience at Moulsecoomb for the whole University community”

Laura Greenwood-Pearsons, Chief Executive of Brighton Students’ Union, said: “I think it’s going to make a massive difference to students. Although, yes, primarily it’s a bar, it’s also got spaces which students can book for social events, for societies, for birthdays – and it’s also a place where they can just come and be.”

She added: “We’ve got heat, we’ve got electricity, we’ve got wi-fi, students can come and plug their Playstation into the TV and just play. They can just sit and be on their own laptops, they don’t have to buy a drink, they don’t have to buy food. So, it’s trying to provide a friendly, social space where they can come and find like-minded students and spend a bit of time outside their bedroom, basically.”

All profits from The Venue will go back into paying for the BSU’s student advice team, societies team and student voice and representation. The bar will also provide part-time employment for 40 student staff.

Russell Spink, Head of External Relations, said: “The new Students’ Union bar is a fantastic space for students and staff to come together. Along with the new gym, it has brought an entirely new dimension to the campus experience at Moulsecoomb for the whole University community.”
